BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — What was supposed to be a simple, late-night run for juice transformed into a harrowing brush with death for 74-year-old Ade Tokumbo. The retired Nigerian-born U.S. Postal Service worker has broken his silence following a vicious, pre-dawn assault by an armed gang of youths outside a West Baltimore convenience store.
The terrifying encounter, which was chillingly caught on surveillance camera, unfolded in the dark hours of July 7 just before 4:00 a.m. Tokumbo had walked up to the entrance of a local 7-Eleven, unaware that the establishment was closed. Suddenly, he was cornered by a pack of six young suspects, one of whom brazenly brandished a semi-automatic weapon.
According to the resilient septuagenarian, the thugs demanded both his money and his vehicle. Refusing to cower, Tokumbo stood his ground and fought back fiercely against overwhelming odds, sustaining severe physical injuries that included multiple fractured ribs.
“I didn’t say a thing to them and they started attacking me and I defended myself,” Tokumbo recounted from outside his home, visibly unfazed. Refusing to sugarcoat the brutality he endured, he dismissed standard labels often applied to youthful offenders. “When they did that to me, alright, I did not think of them as kids or children. I think of them for what they are, demonic hood rats.”
Rejecting the notion of surrendering his hard-earned property to violent street predators, Tokumbo made his stance crystal clear: “To defend myself. That’s why. Look, I paid for that car. Alright. I’m not going to let a criminal do what they want to do. I have absolutely no respect for criminals. I have no respect for them at all.”
The victim also voiced sharp frustration with public discourse surrounding youth crime, arguing that softening terms like “juveniles” or “young people” shields perpetrators from accountability. “See, you keep on saying juveniles and young people. I told you, I don’t think of them that way because they don’t act that way… They’re doing absolutely nothing to assist us, to help other people. All they’re doing is hurting people or killing people.”
Local law enforcement has released surveillance footage of the incident, urgently appealing to the public for tips to identify and track down the six individuals linked to the attempted armed robbery. As of reporting time, no arrests have been finalized, leaving neighbors and community advocates deeply unsettled by the brazen lawlessness plaguing the neighborhood streets.
