Saudi Intercepts Drone Near Mecca, Says Security of Holy Sites Is a ‘Red Line’

A security incident near Islam’s holiest city has triggered a sharp warning from Saudi Arabia, after its military coalition accused Yemen’s Houthis of sending a drone towards Mecca.

Saudi Arabia says its air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the restricted airspace of the holy city.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims was a “red line” and warned that deterrent measures would be taken against the Houthis.

The Saudi-led coalition described the incident as the second attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca, referring to a ballistic missile incident in 2017.

However, the Houthis denied targeting Mecca or other Islamic holy sites. A Houthi military source rejected the Saudi accusation, while senior Houthi official Hezam al-Asad dismissed claims that the group targeted the city.

Mecca is Islam’s holiest city and the focal point of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, making any reported security incident around the city particularly sensitive.
