Countries Where Nigerians Can Still Seek Long-Term Multiple-Entry Visas

A 10-year visa sounds like a passport to a decade of easy travel. It is not. The validity of a visa, the number of entries and the length of each stay are three different things, and the rules have changed significantly for Nigerians in recent years.

Some countries provide long-term multiple-entry visitor visas, allowing eligible travellers to make repeated visits without submitting a completely new application for every trip.

The United Kingdom, for example, allows applicants for Standard Visitor visas to apply for long-term multiple-entry visas lasting two, five or 10 years. Each individual visit can still be limited to six months.

China also offers long-term multiple-entry visa arrangements for nationals of eligible countries and categories. Its official visa guidance continues to recognise five-year and 10-year multiple-entry arrangements in specified circumstances.

South Africa has previously announced arrangements allowing qualifying Nigerian business travellers to obtain multiple-entry visas of up to 10 years. The arrangement was specifically discussed with Nigeria’s business community.

Other countries have historically offered long-validity visas, but travellers must be careful with old lists circulating online.

Canada, for example, changed its policy in 2024. The country stopped treating the maximum-validity 10-year multiple-entry visitor visa as the standard option. Immigration officers now have discretion over whether to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa and how long it should remain valid.

The United States has also changed its visa reciprocity arrangements for Nigerian applicants. Reports indicate that the previous long-validity B1/B2 arrangement is no longer the standard for Nigerians.

ValidViewNetwork reports that travellers should therefore stop treating “10-year visa” lists found online as permanent information.

Visa policies can change without warning, and eligibility depends on nationality, purpose of travel, documentation, travel history and the discretion of immigration authorities.

A long-validity visa also does not give a traveller the right to live permanently in the issuing country. It normally permits repeated visits subject to the conditions attached to the visa and the immigration decision made at the border.
