Zambian Opposition Leader Brian Mundubile, 17 Others Charged with Treason

ValidViewNetwork has learned that Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile, his running mate Makebi Zulu, and 16 others have been formally charged with one count of treason.

The development has been confirmed by their lawyer Milner Katolo, who told MUVI TV News in an exclusive interview. Katolo said the latest arrests and charges bring to 18 the total number of people accused of treason in the matter.

Who Has Been Charged?

ValidViewNetwork understands that among those charged are Mundubile and Zulu, who contested the August 13, 2026, presidential election under the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) ticket.

Also facing the treason charge are Patrick Mwansa, husband of former President Edgar Lungu’s daughter Tasila Lungu, and businessman Valden Findlay.

Lawyer’s Statement

Katolo said his clients have remained in high spirits despite being arrested and charged with the serious offence. He said the accused are looking forward to appearing before the court to answer to the allegations against them.

The lawyer did not, however, provide details of the specific allegations forming the basis of the treason charge or indicate when the accused are expected to appear before court.

What Treason Means Under Zambian Law

Under Zambia’s Penal Code, treason is a serious offence involving acts such as attempting by unlawful means to overthrow the legally constituted Government, attempting by force to alter the law or government policy, or using force to usurp the executive power of the State.

Following amendments to the Penal Code, a person convicted of treason is liable to life imprisonment. The death penalty, which previously applied to treason, was abolished in Zambia in 2022.

No Bail for Treason Accused

The charge also has immediate implications for the accused in relation to bail. Section 123 of the Criminal Procedure Code specifically provides that a person charged with treason shall not be granted bail by a subordinate court, the High Court or the Supreme Court, and may not be released by a police officer.

This means that, unlike many other criminal charges where an accused person can apply for bail, those charged with treason are required to remain in custody while the case proceeds.

Political Context

ValidViewNetwork notes that the arrests come in the aftermath of the August 13 general elections, which have been followed by heightened political tensions and investigations involving opposition figures and supporters.

However, the treason allegations against Mundubile, Zulu and the other accused remain unproven until determined by a competent court. The accused are presumed innocent unless and until they are convicted.
