NIAMEY

Niger’s military government says it has regained control of the capital after a night of gunfire and explosions in which mutinous soldiers seized an airport, a paratrooper base, and attempted to storm the presidential palace, in the most serious internal challenge yet to a junta that has ruled the country since 2023.

Niger’s junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, has not personally commented on the mutiny, and his exact whereabouts remained unconfirmed as of Sunday evening, according to multiple diplomats and analysts cited by international wire agencies.

The unrest began early Saturday, 29 August, when mutinous soldiers besieged Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101, disrupted state television and radio broadcasts, and attempted to breach the fortified perimeter of the presidential palace.

Findings by ValidViewNetwork, drawing on Al Jazeera and Premium Times reporting, show the mutineers went as far as releasing a statement from the airbase declaring Tchiani no longer head of state, before state broadcaster RTN aired footage overnight of soldiers being paraded publicly after what it described as hours of fighting that allowed security forces to “gradually control the situation.”

A junta that leaned on outside help

According to multiple diplomats cited by the Associated Press, Russia’s Africa Corps, the paramilitary successor to the Wagner Group operating in the Sahel, provided aerial and ground support to forces loyal to the junta in putting down the mutiny, underscoring how far Niger has shifted since severing ties with Western security partners after its 2023 coup.

By Saturday evening, the situation remained tense, with mutineers still camped at the airport even as the presidential guard held the presidency itself.

What may have triggered it

Checks by ValidViewNetwork show the timing is significant: according to jihadi researcher Hasret Kargin, the mutiny erupted a day after the junta released four al-Qaeda-linked jihadists in exchange for eleven captured soldiers, a reconciliation-style approach Tchiani had previously condemned when he seized power from elected President Mohamed Bazoum, who had pursued dialogue and conditional amnesty as counterterrorism tools.

Tchiani, by contrast, had vowed a strictly military approach, making the swap a notable departure from his own stated doctrine, and one analysts believe unsettled elements of the junior officer corps.

A junta already under strain

Niger has endured six coups since independence, and this is its second internal military challenge in as many years.

Analysts note the junta has struggled to contain jihadist violence despite its harder line, with some young officers reportedly frustrated that security has worsened rather than improved since 2023.

With soldiers pulled from their posts to either stage or suppress the mutiny, researchers warn groups like the Islamic State Sahel Province and JNIM could exploit the resulting security gaps.

For now, Niger’s junta insists it remains in charge; whether that claim survives the coming days, particularly with its leader still unseen in public, is the question the region is now watching closely.
