Nigeria, Thailand Move to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation

ValidViewNetwork can report that Nigeria and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations at the inaugural Nigeria-Thailand Bilateral Consultations Meeting in Abuja.

Nigeria was led by the Director of the Regions Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Grema Garba, while the Thai delegation was led by the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Sirilak Nyom.

The consultations operationalised the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations, signed during the visit of Thailand’s then Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to Nigeria in 2023.

ValidViewNetwork understands that both countries, which established diplomatic relations in 1962, identified key areas for expanded cooperation including trade and investment, agriculture and food security, energy, manufacturing and mining, healthcare, tourism, ICT and infrastructure.

Agriculture a Priority

ValidViewNetwork has learned that agriculture emerged as a priority area, with Nigeria expressing interest in Thailand’s expertise in rice production, cassava processing, aquaculture, agricultural machinery and food processing.

Both sides also discussed increased Thai investment in Nigeria’s agricultural value chains.

Security Cooperation Strengthened

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation against drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybercrime, online scams and other forms of transnational organised crime.

Thailand expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with Nigerian law-enforcement agencies through intelligence sharing, digital forensics and capacity building.

What This Means

ValidViewNetwork understands that Thailand has offered to host the second round of consultations in Bangkok, while Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to deepening the longstanding friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between both countries.
