AWKA — Security operations across Anambra State intensified on Thursday following a series of coordinated raids by the police, resulting in the arrest of six suspects, including a suspected secessionist and a female drug dealer, authorities said.
The clampdown, executed by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), underscores a renewed push by law enforcement to dismantle criminal networks, cult groups, and illicit drug rings in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the breakthrough began on the evening of August 13, 2026, acting on actionable intelligence.
Operatives stormed a residence in Umudioka, apprehending a 65-year-old man identified as Ifeanyi Ogbuagbo. A subsequent search of the premises uncovered an army uniform and several expended ammunition shells concealed inside a black polythene bag. Preliminary investigations indicate that Ogbuagbo has ties to a criminal faction agitating for self-government. He is currently in custody as detectives dig deeper into his alleged subversive activities and the source of the recovered military gear.

In a simultaneous operation the same evening, tactical teams targeted a notorious criminal hideout in Ekwulobia, located within the Aguata Local Government Area. The raid led to the apprehension of six individuals: 25-year-old Chisom Okafor, alongside Onyedika Moses (36), Iruka Nwaonu (30), Joseph Nwankwo (36), Chukwujekwu Nwoso (32), and Akanimo Orok (40).
Operatives combed the black spot, recovering a substantial quantity of dried weeds believed to be cannabis sativa, alongside other suspected illicit substances.

Reacting to the developments, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to sustain intelligence-led strategies, targeted patrols, and aggressive raids. He has ordered commanders across all divisions to maintain pressure on drug-peddling hubs and identified criminal enclaves to deny miscreants any safe havens in the state.
