OSOGBO, Osun State

History came alive on Friday, August 7, 2026, as Princess Alimot Moredeke Ajoke Osunbunmi, the 10-year-old Arugba of Osogbo, carried the sacred calabash during the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival procession for the first time.

The symbolic journey marked a defining moment in the young princess’ tenure after she was unable to perform the revered duty during the 2025 edition because of her age and the physical demands associated with carrying the sacred vessel.

ValidViewNetwork reports that thousands of devotees, traditional worshippers, tourists and cultural enthusiasts lined the procession route as the young Arugba led the spiritual pilgrimage from the Ataoja’s Palace to the Osun Sacred Grove.

Her successful participation represents one of the most memorable moments of the 2026 festival and further reinforces the enduring strength of Yoruba cultural traditions.

From Young Princess to Sacred Bearer

Princess Alimot was selected in March 2025 through traditional Ifa divination to succeed Osuntomi Ewatomi, whose tenure as Arugba ended following her marriage after serving in the revered position for approximately 12 years.

Last year, because of Alimot’s young age, the sacred calabash was carried by Baba Osun Adesina, a respected chief priest, while the young princess simply led the procession.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Friday’s ceremony marked the completion of her gradual transition into the full responsibilities attached to the sacred office.

Ahead of the procession, respected Yoruba cultural educator and content creator Wàá Ṣeré announced that the necessary traditional rites had been completed.

“The Arugba has been fortified. Ìdáfá Arugba is now done and dusted. Arugba takes the required sacrifice to Èṣù on behalf of the whole of the land of Òṣogbo,” he wrote.

He later added:”Tomorrow, she carries the sacred calabash of Ọ̀ṣun to the motherly spirit that dwells in fresh waters. Ore Yèyé Ọ̀ṣun o!”

Why the Arugba Matters

Within Yoruba cosmology, the Arugba occupies one of the most sacred positions during the Osun-Osogbo Festival.

Traditionally selected from the royal lineage through Ifa divination, the Arugba serves as the symbolic bridge between the people of Osogbo and Ọ̀ṣun, the revered river deity associated with fertility, prosperity, healing and protection.

The sacred calabash she carries contains ritual offerings representing the prayers, hopes, petitions and sacrifices of the entire community.

For devotees, the journey to the Osun Sacred Grove is more than a cultural procession. It is regarded as a spiritual covenant renewed annually between the people and the goddess.

UNESCO Heritage Continues to Draw Global Attention

The Osun-Osogbo Festival remains one of Africa’s most celebrated traditional festivals and is centred around the Osun Sacred Grove, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Every year the festival attracts thousands of visitors, including academics, researchers, diplomats, tourists and traditional worshippers from across Nigeria and around the world.

The 2026 Osun-Osogbo Festival, running from August 7 to August 19, features traditional rites, cultural displays, drumming, dancing, artistic exhibitions and spiritual ceremonies before culminating in the sacred procession.

A Historic Image for a New Generation

Beyond the religious significance, Princess Alimot’s appearance carrying the sacred calabash has become one of the defining images of this year’s festival.

Her successful completion of the ritual signals both continuity and renewal within one of Yoruba civilisation’s oldest living traditions, demonstrating how ancient customs continue to find expression through new generations.

For many observers, Friday’s procession was not merely a ceremonial event but a powerful reminder that cultural heritage survives when history is entrusted to the young.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the successful procession is expected to remain one of the enduring highlights of the 2026 Osun-Osogbo Festival.
