Long before campaign posters appear on street corners, before candidates crisscross the country seeking votes and before millions of Nigerians queue at polling units, another contest quietly shapes the outcome of every election. It is the struggle for organisation, strategy and command.
Elections are rarely won by charisma alone. They are built by the people who design the campaign long before the public sees it.
As Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general election, that invisible battle has begun. Political parties are no longer asking only who their candidates will be. They are increasingly focused on who will direct the campaigns that could determine victory or defeat.
ValidViewNetwork reports that major political parties are accelerating preparations ahead of the official commencement of presidential campaigns on August 19.
Across the political landscape, attention is turning to the appointment of campaign directors general and the construction of campaign structures expected to lead candidates through one of Nigeria’s most closely watched elections.
The Search For Political Generals
Within the ruling All Progressives Congress, discussions are reportedly centring on governors and former governors capable of coordinating President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
Among the names being mentioned are Hope Uzodimma and Tanko Al-Makura. In the opposition African Democratic Congress, reports indicate that former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has emerged as a leading contender to direct former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s campaign.
The Labour Party has confirmed that its campaign structure is already in place, although party officials have yet to publicly announce the identity of its Director General.
Other political parties, including the Social Democratic Party, the New Nigeria People’s Party and the National Democratic Congress, have also indicated that their campaign organisations will be unveiled before the Independent National Electoral Commission’s deadline.
While these appointments may appear administrative, they often determine fundraising, coalition building, message discipline, crisis management and the daily coordination required for a national campaign.
Why The Director General Matters
In every serious political contest, the candidate becomes the public face of the campaign. The Director General, however, becomes its chief architect.
Campaign directors translate political ambition into practical organisation. They coordinate volunteers, supervise media operations, negotiate alliances, allocate resources and ensure that a candidate’s message reaches voters consistently.
Modern elections have become increasingly complex. Success depends not only on popularity but also on logistics, data analysis, communication strategy and rapid decision making.
A poorly organised campaign can squander even significant public goodwill, while an efficient organisation can maximise every political advantage available.
History’s Quiet Lesson
History repeatedly reminds us that great victories often belong as much to organisers as to leaders. Napoleon Bonaparte’s military brilliance rested heavily on the discipline and effectiveness of his marshals, whose organisational ability sustained campaigns across Europe.
Otto von Bismarck unified Germany not merely through speeches but through meticulous political planning, patient coalition building and institutional discipline.
Even in ancient China, the military philosopher Sun Tzu argued that successful commanders secure victory before entering battle by preparing every necessary condition in advance.

Politics follows much the same principle. Campaigns rarely collapse because of a single speech. More often, they succeed or fail because of countless strategic decisions made behind closed doors long before election day arrives.
The public remembers candidates. History often remembers the machinery that carried them to power.
The Real Test
Choosing campaign leaders is only the beginning. The greater challenge lies in whether those organisations can remain disciplined through months of political pressure, unexpected crises and intense public scrutiny.
Nigerian elections have repeatedly shown that political momentum can shift quickly. Alliances evolve, public opinion changes and unforeseen events frequently reshape the electoral landscape.
Campaign structures that appear formidable on paper must eventually prove themselves under real political conditions. As August 19 approaches, the appointments now taking place across Nigeria’s major political parties may attract less attention than campaign rallies or headline speeches.
Yet they represent the first significant moves in a contest that has already begun. When Nigerians finally cast their votes in 2027, much attention will focus on the candidates standing before the electorate.
Less visible, but equally important, will be the men and women who spent months constructing the strategy behind them.
In politics, as in history, the first battle is seldom fought before the crowd. It is won, or lost, long before the public notices that the contest has begun.
