North Korean Colonel Executed For Stealing Rice

NAMPO — In a brutal display meant to send a chilling message to military elites, a high-ranking North Korean coastal guard colonel was executed by firing squad on July 12 for embezzling state reserve grain.

The senior officer, stationed in the key port city of Nampo, was caught red-handed attempting to smuggle dozens of tons of military provisions out of his own unit’s warehouse under the cover of night.

According to regional sources, the colonel exploited lax security to load several dozen metric tons of grain into transport vehicles bound for Nampo Port. However, his operation was cut short when base sentries—who had grown deeply resentful of rampant officer corruption amid widespread civilian hunger—spotted the suspicious midnight cargo movement and alerted the military’s security apparatus.

A Terrifying Warning to the Ranks

Following a swift interrogation by the Military Security Bureau and a rushed court-martial, the colonel received the maximum capital sentence. He was executed at a shooting range near Nampo Port as members of his own unit were forced to watch.

The public execution left a profound psychological impact on the observing military personnel. Witnesses reported that the officers were left visibly shaken, their faces turning pale as they dispersed silently without making eye contact.

Cracking Down on Wartime Greed

The incident comes at a critical juncture as North Korea grapples with severe domestic food shortages. Analysts note that the decision to execute a senior commander highlights Pyongyang’s growing anxiety over internal discipline, widespread pilfering, and the erosion of military readiness.

In response to the scandal, the ruling Workers’ Party central leadership and the military’s General Political Bureau have launched aggressive new anti-corruption directives. A specialized inspection team has been dispatched directly to Nampo Port, imposing strict lockdowns, restricting routine commercial transport, and taking absolute control over cargo entry and exit.

Fear among senior military officials has reportedly reached unprecedented heights as the regime vows zero tolerance for economic crimes within the armed forces.
