​GLASGOW — Team Nigeria’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games reached a breathtaking crescendo on Friday as stellar para-powerlifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered a masterclass performance, breaking her own world record twice to claim gold in the women’s heavyweight division at the SEC Armadillo.

​The inspirational Nigerian captain raised the roof in Scotland, initially hitting a remarkable 172kg before returning on her final attempt to hoist a staggering 175kg, sealing the top podium spot with 134.8 points.

​Oluwafemiayo’s triumph was part of a historic one-two sweep for the country, as compatriot Rita Ferdinand clinched the silver medal with a world-record-breaking 158kg lift in her category, amassing 128.2 points. Australia’s Hani Watson settled for the bronze medal with 111.5 points.

​The golden outing added to an unforgettable opening day for Team Nigeria’s powerlifters, who earlier recorded a similar one-two finish through Esther Nworgu and Esther Oyema in the women’s lightweight class, alongside a silver from Roland Ezuruike in the men’s event.
