The Delta State Police Command has taken decisive action against a group of community leaders in Isoko North Local Government Area, following the brutalization of a resident who dared to hold them accountable. The arrests mark a significant stand against the intimidation of citizens engaging in public discourse regarding infrastructure development.
Godspower Okedi, a resident of Emevor community, became the target of a violent attack after he utilized Facebook to highlight the state of an abandoned road project linked to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Beyond exposing the stalled project, Okedi had publicly questioned the silence of community leadership regarding the matter.
In a move that sparked widespread public outrage, the community leaders responsible for the assault reportedly documented the violence and shared it on social media. The incident drew immediate attention from the Delta State Commissioner of Police, who ordered a swift investigation led by the Area Commander of the Ozoro Area Command.
Following a thorough investigation, the police apprehended the key suspects: Lucky Okeremu, 48, who serves as the Chairman of Emevor Community; Okiemute Oyibo, 46; and Karo Akamakusi, 45.
SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Delta State Command, confirmed that the suspects have been arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction. They face a battery of serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, assault occasioning harm, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and threatening the life of the victim. These charges are brought under Sections 516, 355, 249(e), and 86 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C21, Vol. I, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.
The Command has signaled that the investigation remains active, with tactical efforts currently underway to apprehend additional suspects who are still at large.
