JOS, NIGERIA — Marking a historic shift in its operational strategy, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially commenced the integration of AK-47 assault rifles and advanced pistols into its frontline architecture to counter the rising violent capabilities of drug syndicates.
The disclosure was made on Monday, June 29, 2026, by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), during the formal inauguration of a specialized Train-the-Trainer Course on Weapon Handling at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State.
The landmark initiative represents the first massive weapons induction in the agency’s 36-year history, reflecting a tactical evolution necessitated by increasingly hostile operations across the country.
A Lethal Evolution in Narcotics Trafficking
Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Colonel Murtala Aminu, Gen. Marwa emphasized that the nature of Nigeria’s anti-narcotics campaign has fundamentally changed. Drug trafficking organizations have evolved beyond mere illicit commercial enterprises into heavily armed, organized, and ruthless paramilitary setups.
”Our officers face increasing danger in the field, and it would be unconscionable for this Agency to send men and women into harm’s way without the tools and training to protect themselves and the public they serve,” Marwa stated. “This programme is, therefore, not just about firearms; it is about the preservation of lives and the projection of institutional strength.”
The NDLEA boss expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritized upgrades to the agency’s operational capacity. He also commended the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for intervening swiftly to provide the initial major consignment of firearms and ammunition to kickstart the academy’s training regime without administrative delays.
The China-NORINCO Pipeline and Air Force Logistics
Providing critical insights into the logistics pipeline, Marwa revealed that the procurement process—which was initiated in 2023 through the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO)—has entered its final execution stage.
Thousands of newly procured firearms and specialized ammunition are slated for imminent delivery to Nigeria. A rigorous distribution and strict accountability framework has already been approved to track every weapon. Furthermore, the NDLEA is partnering with the Nigerian Air Force to execute a rapid, strategic airlift of these tactical assets to commands nationwide once delivery is finalized.
Building a Elite Instructor Cadre
The ongoing training in Jos is designed to produce an elite vanguard of pioneer master trainers. Carefully selected from various regional commands based strictly on merit, these participants will return to their respective formations to lead a mandatory, comprehensive one-month training program for all field personnel before the new weapons are operationally deployed.
Marwa explicitly charged the prospective instructors to treat weapon handling as a grave constitutional responsibility rather than a privilege. He underscored four core pillars for the training:
- Bedrock Discipline: Absolute seriousness in all circumstances regarding arms management.
- Safety Culture: Zero tolerance for institutional negligence or avoidable accidental discharges.
- Ethical Proficiency: Restraint and strict adherence to human rights guidelines and the rules of engagement.
- Institutional Integrity: Leading by example as standard-bearers for the revamped agency.
Reflecting on the agency’s sweeping structural transformation over the last few years, Marwa concluded that the NDLEA has successfully repositioned itself as a professional, highly capable, and feared adversary to international drug lords. The induction of tactical firearms, he noted, closes a vulnerability gap and opens a new chapter of enhanced national security.
