KUMASI, GHANA — What should have been a night of historic national jubilation turned into an unspeakable tragedy for the legal community and loved ones of 26-year-old Sara Araba Tettey, a promising young attorney who died while celebrating Ghana’s dramatic World Cup victory over Panama.
The Black Stars’ hard-fought 1-0 win on Wednesday evening sent shockwaves of joy across the country. However, at the Standard Hostel in Bomso—a popular student and graduate hub near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)—the euphoria instantly shattered when Ms. Tettey suddenly collapsed mid-celebration.
Eyewitnesses reported that Ms. Tettey was watching the high-stakes FIFA World Cup fixture with a close-knit group of friends when the final whistle sparked wild cheers. In the midst of the excitement, she suffered a suspected sudden cardiac arrest and fell unconscious.
Gravely concerned friends and onlookers rushed her to the nearby KNUST Hospital. Desperate to save the young lawyer’s life, emergency medical personnel performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) continuously for roughly 45 minutes. Despite their grueling and exhaustive efforts to revive her, she was tragically pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The sudden loss has cast a dark cloud over the legal fraternity and her alma mater. Ms. Tettey was a brilliant alumna of the KNUST Faculty of Law. Just last October, she achieved a major life milestone when she was officially called to the Ghana Bar, launching what many expected to be a stellar legal career. At the time of her untimely passing, she was practicing as a professional associate with O & A Legal Consult.
Tributes have begun pouring in on social media from former classmates, colleagues, and friends, who describe her as a vibrant, deeply intelligent, and warm-hearted individual whose bright future was cut heartbreakingly short.
Her body has since been deposited at the KNUST Medical School mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as her family and colleagues come to terms with a devastating loss born from a moment of pure national pride.
