Prominent SF Arts Patrons Found Dead in SUV Near Redding

​REDDING, CA — The San Francisco arts community is reeling following the sudden and mysterious deaths of prominent cultural patrons Judith “Judy” Wyler Sheldon and her husband, Wylie Sheldon. The couple was discovered unresponsive inside a running vehicle on Monday evening, June 15, along Interstate 5 north of Redding.

​According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an officer checked on a red Jeep Compass parked on the shoulder of the highway approaching Lake Shasta at approximately 5:46 p.m. Inside, they found Judith, 84, in the driver’s seat and Wylie, 86, in the passenger seat. Despite emergency medical intervention at the scene, both were pronounced dead.

​CHP Lieutenant Josh Smith confirmed that the couple, who resided in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, were traveling north to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival at the time of the incident.

​While investigators have stated that they do not suspect foul play, an official cause of death has not yet been determined pending an autopsy. Initial reports from the San Francisco Chronicle suggested the tragedy may be medically related. However, authorities are also investigating environmental factors, noting that Northern California was experiencing extreme weather conditions.

​”It was the hottest day of the year so far, or second hottest,” Lieutenant Smith told media outlets, referencing temperatures that spiked well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday. “I’m sure there’s always a possibility that excessive heat played a role, but I can’t confirm that without a medical exam.”

​Investigators are currently retracing the couple’s journey from the Bay Area and contacting family and friends to piece together the hours leading up to the discovery.

​Judith Sheldon carried a significant Hollywood legacy as the daughter of legendary, three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker William Wyler (director of Ben-Hur and Roman Holiday) and actress Margaret Tallichet. In her youth, Judith briefly stepped into television production during the 1950s before dedicating her life to cultural advocacy.

​She was best known as the board chair of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, an organization dedicated to preserving and showcasing silent era cinema. The Sheldons frequently transformed their Pacific Heights home into a social hub, hosting welcome parties for visiting international artists and festival guests.

​”We are reeling from this news,” Anita Monga, artistic director of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, said in a statement. “Judy and Wylie were very dear to us, supportive and a positive presence at all our events. They were so dear and devoted to one another… they were such integral parts of the community.”

​Beyond film preservation, the couple were longtime fixtures at San Francisco Performances events, spanning several decades. Judith notably served as the co-chair for the organization’s high-profile 43rd season gala.
