MINNA, NIGER STATE — In a major blow to the logistics and intelligence networks of armed gangs operating across the North Central region, troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Savannah Shield (OPSS) have arrested five suspected bandit and terrorist informants in Niger State.

The breakthrough operations, which took place over the weekend, led to the recovery of encrypted communication devices, incriminating terrorist propaganda, a motorcycle, and hundreds of thousands of Naira in cash.

The breakthrough comes just months after the federal government flagged off Operation Savannah Shield to aggressively reclaim the farming belts and forested ungoverned spaces—particularly around the Kainji Lake National Park—from marauding extremist groups.

The Crackdown at Kainji Fringes

According to an official statement released on Sunday by Captain Jamilu Muhammed Yahaya, the Acting Media Information Officer for the Headquarters JTF (North Central) Operation Savannah Shield, the first breakthrough occurred on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

Troops executing a tactical fighting patrol along the critical Doro axis in Wawa, located within the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, intercepted and apprehended three of the suspects.

”Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were active members of a notorious bandit syndicate operating out of Duru, situated right along the vulnerable fringes of the Kainji Lake National Park,” Captain Yahaya stated.

The military recovered two Tecno feature phones and an MP3 player from the trio. Upon immediate analysis, the audio player was found to contain highly inflammatory propaganda and inciting messages. Crucially, the audio files detailed the recent abduction of an unnamed individual in neighbouring Kaduna State, bragging about the successful collection of a N60,000,000.00ransom. A cash sum of N113,400.00 was also seized from them.

Spy Network at the Cantonment Fence

In a second, deeply unsettling development, vigilant troops from the 221 Battalion—operating under the JTF-NC OPSS framework—neutralised a reconnaissance threat directly outside their own base.

While conducting a routine perimeter sweep along the military cantonment’s boundary fence, the unit spotted and arrested two individuals acting suspiciously. Interrogations quickly revealed that the duo had been specifically deployed by terrorist handlers as reconnaissance assets to map out military movements and gather actionable intelligence on the cantonment layout.

A forensic sweep of an Android smartphone belonging to one of the suspects uncovered a horrific photograph of a beheaded victim dated May 2, 2026. Security analysts note that the image firmly links the cell to broader, ultra-violent terrorist organizations active in the region. Other items recovered from this second cell included a Tecno keypad phone, a operational motorcycle, and \text{N}86\text{,100.00} in cash.

Denying Bandits Freedom of Action

The JTF command emphasized that these arrests are part of an aggressive, intelligence-driven campaign designed to choke off the supply chains and information pipelines that allow bandits to launch surprise raids on soft targets.

”The successful arrests underscore the unyielding commitment of Operation Savannah Shield to completely dismantle criminal and terrorist support networks across the Joint Operations Area,” Captain Yahaya added. “The Task Force remains resolute in its mandate to deny criminal elements freedom of action and sustain maximum pressure on all threats to peace and security within the region.”

All five suspects, alongside the recovered exhibits, remain in military custody. Officials confirmed that forensic extraction of the mobile devices is ongoing as troops hunt down remaining members of the syndicates.
