Boiling Point: Billions Budgeted, Insecurity Thrives, Why Security Votes Have Failed Nigerians

As Nigeria continues to battle an alarming wave of kidnappings, banditry, terrorism, communal violence and other violent crimes, attention is increasingly shifting to one of the country’s most controversial and least scrutinized public expenditures—the so-called Security Vote.

For decades, billions and, in recent years, trillions of naira have been earmarked as security votes at the Federal, State and Local Government levels. Yet, from the highways to the farms, from schools to places of worship, Nigerians continue to live under the shadow of fear and uncertainty.

Why has insecurity continued to worsen despite humongous spending on security? Where exactly do the huge security votes go? Why are citizens not seeing corresponding improvements in safety and intelligence gathering? Should security votes continue in their current opaque form, or is it time for a complete overhaul?

These and many more troubling questions will dominate discussions at the forthcoming 44th edition of Boiling Point Arena, the monthly online discourse platform dedicated to national development and public accountability.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 8pm, will examine the provocative theme:
“Kidnapping Economy and National Insecurity: Are Nigeria’s Security Votes Working? What Must Change to Make Nigerians Safe Again?”

To dissect these complex issues, Boiling Point Arena has assembled a distinguished panel of experts with deep knowledge of security, governance and public finance.

Leading the conversation will be Major General Ishola Williams (Rtd), a respected security strategist and former Commandant of the Nigerian Army Signals Corps. He will be joined by Colonel Yomi Dare (Rtd), a renowned military intelligence expert and security analyst, as well as Mr. Seun Onigbinde, Co-founder of BudgIT and one of Nigeria’s foremost advocates for public accountability and transparent governance.

The once-in-a-month interview discourse is hosted by a seasoned media professional and public relations strategist, Ayo Arowojolu.

Frontline traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom will chair the session which will be transmitted via Zoom and broadcast live on seven partner radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States.

Together, the trio of Gen. Williams, Col. Dare and Mr Onigbinde will interrogate the effectiveness of security votes, examine whether the current framework promotes accountability, and propose practical solutions for ensuring that public funds devoted to security genuinely enhance the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

Coming at a time when kidnappers appear to operate with frightening sophistication while governments across the country continue to allocate huge sums under security votes, the discourse promises to ignite a critical national conversation on transparency, accountability and effectiveness in security spending.

The discussion becomes even more urgent against the backdrop of growing concerns over what many observers now describe as a thriving “kidnapping economy”—a criminal enterprise that has transformed abduction for ransom into a lucrative industry across several parts of the country.

Beyond exposing shortcomings, the conversation is expected to spotlight reforms that can strengthen intelligence operations, improve inter-agency coordination, eliminate wasteful spending and restore public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.

According to the organisers, the session is designed not merely to diagnose the problem but to identify actionable pathways towards making Nigeria safer for citizens, investors and future generations.

The programme which holds every second Sunday of any month is targeted at proffering solutions to the myriads of Nigeria’s problems, debuted since November 2022 and is now in its 44th edition.

The discourse will be accessible globally through Zoom, while millions of radio listeners are expected to tune in to the following radio stations; WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM, Opera Tune 106.3FM and Kruzz 92.9FM, alongside a cable television station, NSTV, on GOtv Channel.
