A major scandal has rocked Edo State following the revelation that a supposedly abducted woman, Mrs. Oluchi, staged her own kidnapping to extort N50 million from her family, friends, and the public.
The incident, which began in early June 2026 around the Ikpoba Hill axis of Benin City, initially sparked widespread panic and empathy. Believing her mother was in grave danger, Mrs. Oluchi’s daughter launched a passionate public appeal, soliciting donations to meet the staggering N50 million ransom demanded by the “captors.”
Moved by the family’s plight, Mrs. Oluchi’s social club, the Harmony Ladies Club, joined the rescue campaign. The club aggressively circulated a flyer featuring her photograph and a designated bank account number to mobilize funds. The public responded generously, with donations pouring into the account.
Police Uncover the Plot
The narrative took a sharp turn when detectives from the Edo State Police Command grew suspicious of the circumstances surrounding the abduction. Utilizing sophisticated intelligence-gathering techniques and digital tracking devices, police operatives traced the coordinates of the “kidnappers.”
The investigation revealed that the abduction was an elaborate ruse. Mrs. Oluchi had willingly left her matrimonial home to relocate to a safe house with her boyfriend and other accomplices, orchestrating the scam to capitalize on the region’s security vulnerabilities for financial gain.
As police operatives closed in on their hideout, the pressure became insurmountable. In an attempt to cover her tracks, Mrs. Oluchi suddenly emerged from hiding, claiming she had been released by her captors. However, the police intercepted her, busting the operation.
Family and Social Club React
Following the revelation, Mrs. Oluchi’s daughter issued a public apology, asserting that she acted in complete ignorance and was entirely unaware of her mother’s fraudulent scheme.
The Harmony Ladies Club has also formally distanced itself from the suspect, expressing deep disappointment and embarrassment over the betrayal.

”When news of her alleged abduction broke, the club acted swiftly in absolute good faith,” the club stated. “Members provided extensive emotional, logistical, and financial support during what we believed was a life-threatening crisis… to learn through official investigations that the entire incident was faked is shocking.”
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that a full-scale investigation is ongoing. The bank account used to collect the public donations has been frozen, and authorities are tracking down all remaining accomplices linked to the conspiracy.
