Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted he was left completely in the dark regarding the club’s decision to sack manager Arne Slot, discovering the news via media leaks rather than the Anfield hierarchy.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) ruthlessly wielded the axe on the Dutch tactician following a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Premier League. The decision abruptly concludes Slot’s two-year tenure on Merseyside, having originally succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2024. Reports indicate that FSG has already moved swiftly to secure a deal for former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola to take the reins.
No Consultation for the Captain
Speaking after the Netherlands’ 1-0 international defeat to Algeria, a visibly frustrated Van Dijk revealed that the club’s leadership failed to consult him—or any senior players—before making the monumental call.
”That came as a surprise,” Van Dijk admitted. “I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday, and the news had already been leaked. I then had discussions with the club, but the decision had already been made by then. It’s not as though they asked me for my opinion.”
Despite the abrupt nature of the dismissal, the central defender expressed his gratitude toward his departing compatriot. “I spoke to Arne and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, and I’m grateful for everything they’ve done for me. I know Liverpool will come out of this well.”
An Ever-Present Figure
The managerial shake-up comes despite Van Dijk enjoying a phenomenal individual campaign as an ever-present rock in Liverpool’s backline. The captain started all 38 Premier League matches this season, clocking a staggering 3,420 minutes and contributing six goals—including a vital brace against Aston Villa as pressure mounted on Slot.
His reliability has been a hallmark of the Slot era. In the 2024/25 campaign, Van Dijk featured in 60 matches across all competitions, accumulating 5,444 minutes of action while chipping in with six goals and an assist.
With Iraola expected to be finalized as the new man in the dugout in the coming days, Anfield is bracing for yet another transition period. However, FSG’s handling of Slot’s departure has clearly left a bitter taste in the mouth of the club’s on-field leader.
