ABUJA, NIGERIA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of 39-year-old Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Aina, a distinguished Professor of Computer Engineering at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, will succeed the incumbent Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose highly successful second and final tenure is set to expire on July 31, 2026.
The high-profile transition was made public on Thursday morning in an official statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
A Historic Milestone for JAMB
Professor Aina, who will celebrate his 40th birthday in July, is widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of Computer Engineering. With this appointment, he makes history as the youngest individual ever selected to lead the nation’s premier tertiary admissions regulatory body.
In the presidency’s announcement, Onanuga described the incoming registrar as an exceptional academic, tech innovator, and systems expert who possesses extensive, hands-on experience in managing national examination systems, expanding digital infrastructure, and executing sweeping public-sector institutional reforms.
Interestingly, Aina’s professional ties to the board run deep. The presidency disclosed that he actually began his career within JAMB during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. That early stint provided him with foundational insights into national admissions and data-driven institutional frameworks—foundations that later shaped his career path in examination integrity and technological optimization.
Robust Academic and Professional Profile
The incoming JAMB boss boasts an elite academic background, heavily weighted in computing and digital architecture.
- Undergraduate Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom.
- Postgraduate Degrees: Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Internet Computing and Network Security, followed by a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Digital Signal Processing—both earned at Loughborough University, UK.
- Executive Education: Alumnus of the prestigious Senior Management Programme (SMP) at the Lagos Business School.
For over 15 years, Professor Aina has operated dynamically at the strategic intersection of technology, national policy, and structural transformation. He has frequently served as a chief technical consultant to major examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and various State Ministries of Education, driving reforms aimed at optimizing ICT operations and securing examination integrity.
He is also an active member of numerous prominent professional organizations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Building on Oloyede’s Legacy
President Tinubu expressed strong confidence that Professor Aina’s immense expertise will seamlessly sustain the institutional momentum achieved during Professor Oloyede’s transformative tenure.
Under Oloyede, JAMB became a benchmark for fiscal transparency, structural accountability, and pioneering digital testing in Sub-Saharan Africa.
”President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge, and practical insight into the operations of the Board, to take the critical educational organization beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor,” the statement concluded.
Professor Aina is expected to assume full administrative control of the board on August 1, 2026.
