AKWAEZE — In a major push to transition from subsistence farming to high-value agribusiness, the Anambra State Government has declared its readiness to industrialise the agricultural sector, opening global corridors for local farmers to earn foreign exchange.

The state’s newly minted Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ben Chuks Odoemena, made this disclosure on Wednesday during the formal commissioning of Ideal Agro Allied Produce Limited—a state-of-the-art tuber crop processing company located in Akwaeze, Anaocha Local Government Area.

The industrial-scale plant, founded by prominent businessman and industrialist Chief Sir Dr. Ikenna Okafor (Ide Akwaeze), is strategically equipped to eliminate post-harvest losses by processing local yams, cassava, potatoes, and other root crops into export-grade products.

A New Dawn: Moving Beyond Consumption

The event marked the first official field assignment for Dr. Odoemena following his swearing-in by Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Monday as part of the reconstituted “Team Solution 2.0” cabinet. Speaking at the ceremony, the commissioner emphasized that the state has aggressively moved past the traditional cycle of cultivating solely for local consumption.

”I am incredibly happy that my first official assignment after being sworn in is the inauguration of an agro-processing plant that guarantees zero wastage in tuber crops,” Odoemena stated. “What we are witnessing here is the operational secret of agriculture in civilized, developed economies. In Anambra, the Soludo administration is fully committed to backing industries of this scale because the era of subsistence farming is over. We are transitioning to a period where we cultivate to eat, process, and export to enrich our people.”

Dr. Odoemena further stressed that the deployment of advanced processing technologies will grant local farmers direct access to the international market, ensuring that unsold seasonal harvests do not rot away on farmlands.

Connecting Farms to Global Supermarkets

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ideal Agro Allied Produce Limited, Chief Ikenna Okafor, explained that the venture was born out of a strategic vision to solve the perennial problem of post-harvest wastage and to systematically create mass employment.

To anchor its raw material pipeline, the company has already embarked on large-scale mechanized yam cultivation across a massive 200-plot farmland estate in Ufuma, Orumba North LGA.

Okafor revealed that the company’s processed products have already secured rigorous regulatory clearances from top-tier international food standards agencies, positioning them for immediate shelf space abroad.

”We have secured the official regulatory approvals from food processing agencies in the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom, alongside the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) here in Nigeria,” Okafor announced. “Our operational model is built to empower local farmers. We will process their unsold yams, potatoes, and cassava, package them to international export standards, and remit the foreign exchange proceeds back to them after deducting standard handling charges.”

Corroborating the company’s readiness, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Esther Okafor, described the processing facility as a vital structural innovation that would fundamentally rewrite the export development index of the South-East region.

Replicating the Agribusiness Blueprint

The grand opening drew an extensive crowd of cooperative farming groups, agricultural stakeholders, and top government officials who conducted a thorough facility tour of the processing machinery.

The establishment of the Akwaeze factory aligns seamlessly with the four-pillar agribusiness development strategy recently unveiled by the Ministry of Agriculture. The framework prioritizes robust private-sector investments, functional value addition, and commercialization to transform the state into a competitive agricultural powerhouse.

With the industrial processing hub now active, Anambra State is signaling to local and international markets that it is fully prepared to leverage its local output to tap into multi-million dollar global food export chains.

To learn more about the ongoing agricultural shift in the state, this video covers Ide Commercial Farms launching large-scale operations in Anambra, providing an inside look at the Ufuma cultivation fields that feed into the newly inaugurated processing plant.
