The Nigerian diplomatic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Mohammed Mahmud Lele, the country’s newly appointed ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
Lele, a career diplomat who had just received his assignment from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye. He was 50 years old.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed the development in a statement released on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to the ministry, Lele’s death followed a “protracted illness” for which he was receiving treatment abroad.
Until his transition, Ambassador Lele served as the Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His appointment to the Algerian mission was seen as a strategic move by the administration, following his confirmation by the Nigerian Senate earlier this year.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele’s trajectory in the foreign service was marked by academic excellence and strategic postings. An alumnus of Bayero University, Kano, where he studied Economics, he joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.
Over the course of his 25-year career, he held key positions in several of Nigeria’s vital diplomatic missions, including Berlin (Germany), Lomé (Togo), and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
The remains of the late envoy arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday, where they were received by the Permanent Secretary of the MFA, Dunoma Umar Ahmed.
Speaking at the airport, Ahmed described Lele as a “hardworking, humble, and fine officer” whose intellectual depth and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives set him apart.
”His death is a monumental loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the ministry stated.
The diplomat was buried on Wednesday afternoon in Kano State, in accordance with Islamic rites. He is survived by his family and associates. The Ministry has expressed its deepest condolences to the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the fortitude of his loved ones to bear the loss.
