Residents of Surulere and Iponri are on high alert following the fatal shooting of Adedipe Adeyinkan, a high-ranking member of the Buccaneers Confraternity (also known as the Brothers Across Nigeria, BAN), popularly known as “Agali.”
The incident occurred late Saturday night, April 11, 2026, on the National Stadium Bridge inward Iponri. Reports indicate that Adeyinkan was driving a white SUV when he was ambushed and shot by unidentified gunmen. Though he was rushed to the Mainland General Hospital in Yaba, medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the killing via a statement on Sunday.
“The Command is aware of the shooting incident involving Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as ‘Agali,’ which occurred on 11th April 2026 at about 11:30 p.m. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police stated.
Rising Fears of Retaliation
The death of Agali, described by local sources as a “number one man” and a highly influential figure in the Shitta/Akere axis of Surulere, has sparked immediate fears of a bloody reprisal. Social media platforms monitoring cult activities have already linked the hit to long-standing rivalries with other confraternities in the area.
Adding to the complexity are unconfirmed reports suggesting the hit may have political undertones. With local elections approaching, sources claim Adeyinkan had recently shifted his political allegiance, potentially drawing the ire of powerful interests.
Security Crackdown
As of Sunday evening, a heavy security presence was visible across Surulere, particularly in Iponri, Shitta, and Aguda. Police patrol vehicles have been stationed at key intersections to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
This killing follows a week of heightened cult activity in Lagos, including a separate clash in Lagos Island where three people were reportedly killed. Residents are now calling on the Lagos State Government and the Commissioner of Police to take decisive action before the “silent war” between rival groups escalates into a full-scale territorial conflict.
