LAGOS – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday recommitted to building on six and a half years of progress by delivering a slate of transformative projects across Lagos State in 2026, his final full year in office. Speaking at the Lagos Annual Thanksgiving Service at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), themed “Grateful for Unfailing Mercies,” he framed the year as a pivotal moment to cement his administration’s legacy through the THEMES+ agenda—Traffic Management and Transportation, Health and Education, Education and Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment and Tourism, and Security.

The event, organized by the First Family alongside the Ministry of Home Affairs, drew top dignitaries including Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, religious leaders, and traditional rulers. First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu read from Psalm 89:1-8, while gospel artists led praises and clerics prayed for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and Lagos residents.

Budget of Shared Prosperity to Fuel Ambitious Rollout

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the forthcoming 2026 budget, dubbed “The Budget of Shared Prosperity,” currently under review by the State House of Assembly. Pegged at over N4.02 trillion—with N1.2 trillion allocated to capital projects—the plan rests on four pillars: human-centred development, modern infrastructure, a thriving economy, and effective governance. Online budget previews from lagosstate.gov.ng emphasize resilience against climate challenges and inclusivity, aiming for a “cleaner, safer, more prosperous, resilient, and inclusive” Lagos.

“We are four days into a new year, with 361 days ahead—each brimming with promise,” Sanwo-Olu declared. “This is my last full year as governor, so I am driven to make it count deliberately and decisively.”

Key Projects Set for Commissioning

Lagosians can expect a flurry of completions in health, transport, housing, and more. Confirmed projects include:

1.Healthcare: Ojo General Hospital, Massey Children’s Hospital, and the new Psychiatric Hospital in Ketu Ereyun, Epe—addressing mental health gaps amid rising urban demands.

2.Infrastructure Hubs: Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub in Epe; new Multi-Storey Office Complex in Alausa; Omi Eko water project for improved supply.

3.Roads and Bridges: Odo Iya-Alaro Link Bridge; Opebi-Mende Link Bridge (Ikeja); Igbogbo–Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Igbe Road; Agric Isawo–Konu–Arepo Road (Phase 1); Gberigbe Road; Adamo–Akanun–Agunfoye–Lugbusi Road (all Ikorodu); Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway Phase 2A (Eleko to Greensprings and Majek to Abraham Adesanya); Magbon–Alade Township Roads (Ibeju-Lekki); Ijegun–Ijagemo and Akesan–Igando Roads (Alimosho).

Additional sectors like youth centers, flood control, bus/ferry terminals, waste plants, and courts will see advancements, per Vanguard reports. These align with THEMES+ expansions, including digital tech integration noted in recent state updates.

Tributes and Broader Context

Sanwo-Olu paid homage to President Tinubu, “father of modern Lagos,” and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for originating the thanksgiving tradition. He thanked religious leaders for their prayers, underscoring faith’s role in governance.

As Lagos—Africa’s economic powerhouse—grapples with population growth (over 25 million) and infrastructure strain, these pledges signal a high-stakes push. Analysts via Punch Nigeria note potential challenges like funding amid federal revenue dips, but Sanwo-Olu’s track record, including past completions like the Blue Line Rail, bolsters optimism.
