Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed his dismay over the allegation of budget padding sparked by Senator Abdul Ningi’s recent interview, stating that it has tarnished the Senate’s image. Akpabio conveyed his concerns during a session on the Senate floor on Tuesday, emphasizing the damage inflicted on the Senate’s integrity by the controversy.
In the interview with BBC Hausa, Senator Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, claimed that the National Assembly approved a budget of N25 trillion for 2024, in contrast to the N28.7 trillion implemented by the Federal Government.
During an open session, Akpabio lamented the negative repercussions of the allegation on the Senate’s reputation. He criticized Ningi for his initial interview and a subsequent one where he appeared to defend his original claim of budget padding.
