​Yale Professor Cajetan Iheka Begins Fulbright Fellowship at UNILAG to Boost Academic Excellence

​The United States Mission in Nigeria has officially welcomed Dr. Cajetan Iheka, a distinguished Professor of English at Yale University, as he commences a prestigious 10-month Fulbright fellowship at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

​Beginning August 20, Dr. Iheka’s residency is designed to foster deep institutional linkages and elevate research output within the Nigerian tertiary education sector. During his tenure at UNILAG, his portfolio will focus heavily on human capital development, encompassing specialized seminars and targeted training modules tailored for early-career academics and postgraduate scholars. Additionally, he will spearhead course development initiatives, steer graduate curriculum overhauls, and mentor faculty members through intensive teaching and publishing workshops.

​Dr. Iheka brings a wealth of administrative and academic leadership to the institution. At Yale University, he holds several influential positions, including Director of the Whitney Humanities Center, Chair of the Council on African Studies, Head of the Yale Africa Initiative, and Editor-in-Chief of the African Studies Review. Internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in ecocriticism, ecomedia, and postcolonial literature, he has authored or edited several critical texts, such as Naturalizing Africa: Ecological Violence, Agency, and Postcolonial Resistance in African Literature and African Ecomedia: Network Forms, Planetary Politics.

​This high-profile academic exchange underscores the enduring educational partnership between the United States and Nigeria. Since the inception of the Fulbright Program in 1960, more than 1,200 scholars across Nigeria have participated in the exchange initiative. Alumni of the program continue to drive national development, frequently occupying prominent leadership roles across government circles, public administration, private enterprise, and international organizations.
