Months of intense public anxiety and grief over the brutal murder of a 23-year-old nursing student, Miss Vivian Chilaka, have finally yielded a major breakthrough as the Anambra State Police Command arrested the prime suspect, 26-year-old Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe.

The tragic incident, which occurred in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, on June 14, 2026, sent shockwaves through the community after the young student was found dead in her apartment. The case initially sparked widespread outrage and raised serious security concerns across the state.

According to a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, operatives cornered and apprehended the suspect on September 4, 2026, acting on credible and actionable intelligence provided by members of the public.

Preliminary investigations disclosed a chilling sequence of events. Investigators established that Ibekwe allegedly scaled the perimeter fence of the victim’s residence using a ladder under the cover of darkness, harboring the intent to sexually assault her. However, a desperate physical struggle ensued when the victim resisted the intrusion. During the altercation, the suspect reportedly pulled out a knife and inflicted fatal stab wounds on the student before fleeing the scene.

In a significant update regarding the trajectory of the investigation, the police command officially cleared the victim’s landlord, who had been initially detained and subjected to intense suspicion following the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Authorities confirmed that thorough forensic and circumstantial probes completely exonerated him, urging the public to lay to rest any lingering suspicions against him.

Furthermore, police sources revealed that during interrogations, the suspect made startling confessions linking himself to a string of similar criminal acts and assaults within the locality. Detectives have intensified efforts to corroborate these claims and ascertain the full extent of his criminal activities.

Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, lauded the residents of Alor for their exemplary patience, steadfastness, and partnership with law enforcement. He reserved special praise for informants whose timely tips catalyzed the breakthrough, assuring citizens that the command remains uncompromising in its mandate to hunt down violent criminals and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

The suspect remains in police custody as comprehensive investigations continue, with legal proceedings expected to follow upon the conclusion of the police dossier.
