ABUJA

Today marks a quiet but consequential deadline in Nigeria’s road to 2027: the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal closes for good, alongside the nationwide window for claims and objections against the voter register.

What emerges from it, findings by ValidViewNetwork show, could shape the contest for Aso Rock more than any campaign slogan will.President Bola Tinubu, seeking re-election on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is not a party to any dispute over the register itself, but his administration’s economic record sits at the centre of how both sides are reading the numbers.

A register bigger than any single party can bank on

According to figures reported by Daily Sun’s Sunday edition, Kano State led the latest registration cycle with 330,906 new sign-ups, followed by Lagos with 181,254, Delta with 166,895, Edo with 156,150 and Ebonyi with 146,507.

Lagos still holds Nigeria’s largest single voter bloc overall, at just over seven million, with Kano close behind at 5.92 million, a detail that matters because Section 134 of the Constitution requires any presidential winner to secure at least 25 per cent of the vote in two-thirds of the country’s states, not just raw numbers from a few strongholds.

Unlike 2023, when the presidential race was largely a three-way fight between the APC, PDP and Labour Party, the field has since reshuffled. Atiku Abubakar now runs under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside Rotimi Amaechi, while Peter Obi has moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), pairing with Rabiu Kwankwaso, a coalition explicitly built to challenge APC dominance in the North-West and South-West axes that decide elections.

The optimist and the pessimist

Chief Henry Ajomale, a Tinubu ally and former Lagos APC chairman, told Daily Sun the opposition’s old playbook, pointing to religious framing and #EndSARS-era grievances, will not work twice, arguing that voters now recognise “fair representation” and security gains in states like Borno, Kaduna, Yobe and Adamawa.

He predicted a turnout that rewards, rather than punishes, the administration. Tunji Shelle, an ADC chieftain in Lagos, offered the opposite read, submitting that economic hardship — Nigerians struggling to afford “basic meals or simple transportation”, will drive an unusually large protest turnout. He cited his own informal soundings suggesting eight in ten voters he spoke with had already turned against the incumbent.

The turnout problem beneath the numbers

The NDC’s Obidient Movement coordinator, Tanko Yunusa, set a public target of 60 per cent turnout among registered voters, more than double the roughly 27 per cent recorded in 2023, while warning that voter intimidation, seen in this year’s Osun off-season election, must be curbed by security agencies.

Civic advocate Chekwas Okorie, convener of the Igbo Agenda Dialogue, pointed to Osun’s turnout of over 50 per cent as a hopeful signal, noting that only about 2.2 million of the South-East’s 11.5 million registered voters cast ballots in 2023, a gap he has spent years working to close.

What happens between now and January

Whatever the final figures show once INEC processes today’s closing numbers, the deeper contest, converting a bigger register into collected PVCs and actual votes is only beginning.

INEC’s next test is transparency: civic groups are already pressing the commission to publish lists of registered voters who haven’t yet collected their cards, arguing that an uncollected PVC is, in practical terms, a vote that never happened.
