WASHINGTON — In a sweeping consular restructuring, the United States Department of State has announced that routine visa processing will be suspended across 25 diplomatic posts in Africa starting August 1.

Under the new policy, operations are being centralized into 20 designated regional hubs. According to Washington, the bold realignment is designed to tighten national security, cut down on government waste, and enforce uniform vetting standards across the board.

A New Regional Map for Consular Access

The sweeping directive follows an administrative push aligned with President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda. While affected embassies and consulates will remain fully open for other diplomatic functions and American Citizen Services, they will cease routine immigrant and non-immigrant visa interviews and adjudication.

The extensive list of diplomatic locations losing local routine processing includes Abuja (Nigeria), Antananarivo (Madagascar), Asmara (Eritrea), Bamako (Mali), Banjul (The Gambia), Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo), Bujumbura (Burundi), Conakry (Guinea), Cotonou (Benin), and Durban (South Africa).

Other affected posts include Freetown (Sierra Leone), Gaborone (Botswana), Harare (Zimbabwe), Juba (South Sudan), Libreville (Gabon), Lilongwe (Malawi), Lusaka (Zambia), Maputo (Mozambique), Maseru (Lesotho), Mbabane (Eswatini), N’Djamena (Chad), Niamey (Niger), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), and Windhoek (Namibia).

Where Applicants Must Go Now

Applicants residing in the affected countries will now be redirected to one of 20 regional hubs—such as Lagos, Accra, Abidjan, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Cape Town—depending on their designated jurisdiction.

The policy shift impacts a wide spectrum of travel categories, including:

  • Immediate Relative (IR) and Family Preference (FP) cases
  • Employment-Based (EB) and general work or study visas
  • Fiancé/Fiancée (K) and Adoption categories
  • Diversity Visas (DV)
  • Follow-to-join asylee and refugee cases (V92/V93)

Logistics and Valid Visas

The State Department emphasized that this policy does not invalidate any currently active or previously issued US visas, which remain fully valid for travel. However, individuals seeking new appointments on or after August 1 must book through their newly assigned regional hub, a change expected to introduce additional travel logistics and financial costs for applicants forced to journey across borders for interviews.
