Electropop Icon Kavinsky Dies at 50

French electronic music producer Vincent Belorgey, globally recognized by his stage persona DJ Kavinsky, was found dead at his home in Paris at the age of 50.

Investigation Underway

The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that an official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of his death. Emergency responders discovered no suspicious elements or signs of foul play at the scene. While authorities have not officially verified a medical cause, initial police sources and local reports indicated that the musician had complained of persistent headaches in the days prior, with a stroke currently suspected.

A Defining Legacy in Synthwave

Kavinsky became a pillar of the electronic and retro-house music scenes, etching his name into pop culture history with his 2010 masterpiece, “Nightcall”. The track achieved international acclaim after serving as the haunting opening-credits anthem for Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 cult-classic film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling.

Operating behind a carefully crafted fictional persona—imagined as a zombie producer resurrected from a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa crash—Belorgey intentionally shunned traditional celebrity culture. Following years of anticipation, he released his debut studio album, OutRun, in 2013, followed by his sophomore LP, Reborn, in 2022 after a lengthy hiatus.

In the wake of his passing, political leaders and fellow artists poured in with tributes. French President Emmanuel Macron honored the artist on social media, writing that he remains “a source of French pride forever”, while collaborators like The Weeknd remembered him as an enduring inspiration to the modern electronic landscape.
