Twenty Hospitalised Following Lewes Rail Disaster

​Investigators are scouring the tracks outside Lewes this morning after a packed passenger service came off the rails, flipping multiple carriages onto their sides and sparking a major emergency response.

​The disaster unfolded at approximately 3.55pm on Thursday when the eight-carriage Southern service—carrying roughly 150 passengers from London Victoria to Eastbourne—buckled near Lewes railway station in East Sussex. The rear three carriages left the track and tipped onto embankments just north of the Lewes tunnel.

​British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that 20 people required hospital treatment, including two individuals who sustained serious injuries and were rushed to major trauma centres. A further 18 passengers suffered less severe injuries, while dozens more were treated for shock and minor cuts at the scene before being escorted to a local community centre.

​Passengers described scenes of absolute terror as the train violently shook and pitched upward before coming to a grinding halt.

​Rob Bradley, travelling in the fourth carriage with his six-year-old daughter, Mabel, recalled feeling the train speed up before a heavy jolt. “Everything got thrown forward… we saw the whole back of the train was open, and smoke and dust were pouring into the carriage,” he said.

​Emergency services mounted a massive rescue operation, deploying 10 fire engines, technical rescue teams, and multiple air ambulances alongside over 20 ambulance crews. Though several passengers were initially trapped inside the overturned wreckage, all occupants were successfully evacuated by 7.30pm.

​The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has deployed a full team to the site, working alongside Network Rail to determine the cause of the disaster. Early scrutiny has focused on sections of severely buckled track near the crash site, leading experts to question whether extreme heat conditions during the current regional heatwave played a contributing factor.

​Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern over the incident, thanking emergency responders for their swift coordination. Meanwhile, Network Rail and Southern Railway have warned that major disruption will persist across regional lines, with a strict “do not travel” advisory remaining in place for affected routes between Lewes, Brighton, Haywards Heath, and Eastbourne.
