Narrow Escape in Toulouse: Officers Survive Stabbing Rampage

​TOULOUSE — Two police officers narrowly escaped life-threatening injuries on Monday evening after being ambushed by a knife-wielding assailant while on routine patrol in the historic Rue d’Austerlitz neighborhood.

​According to the Toulouse Public Prosecutor’s Office, the 30-year-old Italian national launched a sudden assault on the patrol officers. Despite initial reports highlighting statements made during the confrontation, investigators have explicitly stated that the violent episode lacks an “Islamist character.” The suspect reportedly told authorities during questioning that he had been “obeying voices.”

​The violent encounter escalated quickly when the suspect pulled out multiple blades. One officer sustained a severe stab wound to the neck, missing the carotid artery by fractions of a millimeter and requiring multiple stitches. A responding female officer was stabbed three times, though tragedy was averted thanks to her standard-issue bulletproof vest. A third officer managed to escape physical injury.

​Officers on the scene successfully subdued the assailant after he discarded successive weapons. The suspect has since been formally charged with the attempted murder of public officials and placed in pretrial detention.

​Interior Minister Laurent Nunez extended his full support to the injured personnel, emphasizing that investigators will conduct a comprehensive probe into the precise motives and mental state driving the attack. Local municipal officials noted that the patrol unit came perilously close to a fatal outcome.
