ValidViewNetwork is set to host the third edition of its Monthly Global Discourse on Sunday, August 30, 2026, bringing together two distinguished voices to interrogate the contentious boundary between patriotic criticism and the harmful demarketing of Nigeria.

The virtual discourse, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. WAT, is themed “Truth or Treason? Navigating the Thin Line Between National Critique and National Demarketing.”

The edition will feature Ambassador Dr. Yemi Farounbi, OON, and Prof. Samaila Mande as Distinguished Discussants.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the conversation comes at a critical time when Nigerians at home and in the diaspora continue to debate how the country should confront its deep-seated challenges while simultaneously protecting its image, interests and reputation before the international community.

The third edition will examine whether exposing Nigeria’s problems amounts to responsible national criticism or contributes to negative narratives that damage the country’s global standing.

Chairman Pays Personal Tribute to Farounbi

Ahead of the gathering, the Chairman of the ValidViewNetwork Advisory Council, Mr Lanre Ogundipe, has offered a deeply personal and moving tribute to Ambassador Farounbi.

IN A TRIBUTE personally signed by Ogundipe, he described the veteran diplomat not simply as a distinguished public figure, but as a father, mentor, teacher, guide and benefactor who played a formative role in his own remarkable professional journey.

HE SAID:

“Baba Faroumbi is my father in every sense of the word. He is not merely a father figure; he is a mentor, a teacher, a guide and one of the principal architects of the journey that brought me to where I am today.”

Ogundipe recalled that his relationship with Farounbi dates back to 1976, when the respected broadcaster gave him his first job at NTA Ibadan.

HE RECALLED:

“He gave me my first job in life in 1976 at NTA Ibadan. From that moment, he did not merely employ me; he invested in me. He watched me grow, observed the evolution of my craft and followed my journey in Communication Arts with the discerning eye of a father who had planted a seed and was patient enough to watch it become a tree.”

The former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and African Union of Journalists said Farounbi would often describe his professional growth through the powerful metaphor of a stream becoming a river and eventually an ocean.

HE ADDED:

“He would often describe my journey in the most generous metaphor. He said I began as a flowing stream in the field of Communication Arts, but that he had watched that stream grow into a big river. Then he would add, with the confidence of someone who had seen something in me long before others did, that in the foreseeable future, Lanre would become an ocean in the field.”

Ogundipe said those words have remained significant because they came from a man who knew exactly where his journey began.

Examining the Thin Line Between Critique and Demarketing

ValidViewNetwork reports that the discourse will consider the responsibility of citizens, media professionals, public officials, academics and other stakeholders in shaping the narrative about Nigeria.

The discussion builds on the previous edition, which focused on

“National Demarketing and the Nigerian Psyche: Resetting Nigeria’s Public Mindset.”

The latest edition takes the conversation further by examining the difficult boundary between speaking truth to power and damaging the national brand.

ValidViewNetwork further reports that the subject seeks to interrogate one of the most delicate questions in contemporary public discourse: when does legitimate criticism of a nation become an act that damages the nation’s image, interests and prospects?

In a democracy, citizens, journalists, academics and public intellectuals must have the freedom to question policies, expose failures and demand accountability.

Yet, that freedom also raises questions about responsibility, patriotism, context and the consequences of the narratives we project to the world.

Distinguished Discussants Bring Depth to the Conversation

Ambassador Dr. Yemi Farounbi, OON, brings decades of experience across broadcasting, journalism and diplomacy. He began his broadcasting career with WNTV/WNBS and later worked with the Nigerian Television Authority before becoming Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

He also served Nigeria as ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Cambodia.

His extensive experience in media, public communication and diplomacy positions him to offer valuable insight into how national narratives are created and projected.

Prof. Samaila Mande brings an academic and institutional perspective to the conversation, drawing on his extensive experience in scholarship, administration and civic engagement.

His participation will add an intellectual dimension to the debate over national responsibility, public discourse and the consequences of how Nigeria’s challenges are communicated at home and abroad.

Together, the discussants are expected to provide complementary perspectives on one of the most difficult questions in contemporary national communication: When does criticism become demarketing?

Ogundipe Pledges Attendance, Offers Heartfelt Prayer

ValidViewNetwork reports that for Ogundipe, the appearance of Ambassador Farounbi carries a significance that is far more personal than professional.

Explaining his reaction to the publicity for the forthcoming discourse, Ogundipe said it immediately triggered a personal response, and he consequently pledged to make every effort to attend the Third Global Discourse despite whatever other engagements he may have had.

In a particularly emotional passage of his tribute,

HE DECLARED:

“I will therefore put aside whatever I may have planned and make every effort to be there to honour my father, mentor and benefactor.”

HIS PRAYER for Farounbi was equally heartfelt:

“My prayer for Baba is simple and heartfelt: may God continue to grant him sound health, strength, peace and a rewarding network of people around him. May the road he helped construct for many of us continue to produce generations of professionals whose lives and accomplishments stand as living testimony to his contribution.”

Ogundipe concluded his tribute with words that perhaps best capture the essence of Ambassador Farounbi’s influence:

“Some people pass through our lives. Others help build the road on which we travel. Baba Faroumbi belongs unmistakably to the second category.”

Stakeholders, Professionals, Citizens Invited to Participate

Stakeholders across the media, government, diplomacy, academia, civil society, business, youth organisations and the general public are invited to join the conversation.

The platform also encourages Nigerians at home and abroad to participate, engage with the discussants and contribute their perspectives to the important national conversation.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Monthly Global Discourse holds every last Sunday of the month, providing a recurring platform for thought leaders and stakeholders to examine critical national and global issues.

A Discourse of National Consequence

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Monthly Global Discourse remains committed to creating a platform where important national questions can be examined openly, intelligently and responsibly.

The August edition will therefore place Nigeria’s national narrative under the spotlight, asking whether Nigerians can confront the country’s shortcomings honestly without inadvertently becoming agents of its demarketing. The significance of Sunday’s discourse, therefore, extends beyond the advertised subject.

It will bring together a distinguished gathering around a matter that demands courage, intellectual honesty and careful reflection, while also providing an opportunity to celebrate a man whose professional life has helped shape the careers of others.

For ValidViewNetwork, the Third Global Discourse is another expression of its commitment to creating spaces where consequential questions can be examined by people with the experience and intellectual capacity to illuminate them.

For Lanre Ogundipe, however, August 30 carries a more intimate meaning, it is an opportunity to sit once again before the man who, decades ago, opened a door for a young professional and helped him discover the possibility of becoming something greater.

ValidViewNetwork invites all stakeholders, professionals, thought leaders, politicians, and patriotic citizens, to participate in this vital dialogue.

The session promises to move beyond mere criticism to explore actionable strategies for fostering a more resilient and optimistic national identity.
