President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially nominated Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu-Udeh, SAN, the current Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Enugu State, as a minister in his administration. The President transmitted Udeh’s name to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation in compliance with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates Senate approval for ministerial appointments.
This nomination comes in the wake of the resignation of the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, who stepped down following allegations and investigations into certificate forgery concerning his academic and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) credentials. Nnaji’s resignation left Enugu State without federal cabinet representation, a constitutional requirement that demands each state has at least one minister.
In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu expressed hope for the Senate to give the nomination the usual expedited scrutiny and approval. The Senate President subsequently referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for immediate screening.
Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu-Udeh, a distinguished legal practitioner recently elevated to the status of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is expected to fill the vacancy and restore Enugu’s representation in the Federal Executive Council. This swift move underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining geopolitical balance and constitutional fidelity in his cabinet selections.
The Senate’s confirmation process now begins, with political observers closely monitoring for a prompt decision on the nomination of Dr. Udeh as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
