The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has commended the outstanding performance of its students at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2025 International Final held at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Singapore, the birthplace of the WRO Initiative, between November 26 to 28, 2025.

The Lagos State 17-Man team, led by the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, including officials and coaching crew, represented Nigeria in multiple categories of events, showcasing their skills in robotics and STEM Education.

The year 2025 edition, with the global theme: “The Future of Robots”, recorded the most significant participation in WRO history with 3,300 young innovators from 112 countries around the world and 600 competing teams.

The global event seeks to provide a platform for young innovators to explore how robotics and science-intelligent machines can shape the future of cities, agriculture, sustainability, healthcare, accessibility and space exploration.

The three-day programme featured an opening ceremony, practice and competition rounds, project judging, an international friendship night and the closing award ceremony. Nigeria was awarded one of the highest users of WRO Learning Platforms for Robotics training.

Projects presented include: SMART GUARD BOT (Future Innovation, Junior Category), Okesuna Junior Secondary School, Lagos Island, emerged 2nd in Africa. The Team developed AI-powered robots for electrical fault detection in Lagos Island and beyond. Members are Taiwo Oluwasemilore Elizabeth (13 years), Adegboye Esther Idunnu (15 years), and Mrs Ogundipe Dorcas Oluwafemi (Teacher/Coach).

The Government Technical College, Ikotun came 3rd in Africa, with the Spaar & Lego-Based Assistant Robot Future Innovation (Senior Category).

The school created a solar-powered AI Agricultural Robot for precision farming. Members are Izahben Goodluck Chukwuka (15 years), Olawoye Solomon Moyinoluwa (15 years), and Mr Olasupo Kolawole Olalekan (Teacher/Coach).

The team developed a dual-robot Innovation which aligns with SDGs 2,7,9, and 13 by advancing sustainable agriculture and climate-smart innovation.

Coming first in Africa, in the senior category, Robo Mission, is New Era Senior High School, Surulere. The team members are Adigun Mariam Ideraoluwa (15 years), Saliu Ameerat Odunola (15 years), and Mr Akingbade Olalekan Joseph (Teacher/Coach).

The students’ performance reflects their understanding of Engineering concepts, teamwork and mission execution

The Robo Era Team (Robo Mission, Junior) witnessed the New Era Girls Junior Secondary School, Surulere, clinching 2nd in Africa and has its members as Ishaq Habeebat Tejumola (12 years), Adigun Khadijat Oluwademilade (13 years) and Mr Ogundeyi Adewale Oluwabusayo (Teacher/Coach). The team demonstrated strong technical proficiency and excellent teamwork

These achievements demonstrate Lagos State’s commitment to advancing STEM Education and robotics development. The teams’ innovations addressed real-world challenges, including electrical safety, agriculture, and sustainability.

The performance of Lagos State teams, no doubt, shows Nigeria’s rising capacity in global robotics education and the positive outcomes of our STEM investments.

The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is a global robotics competition that promotes STEM education and innovation among young people.
