LAGOS

A bitter contract dispute between Afrobeats singer Seyi Vibez and his former label boss spilled onto celebrity chef Hilda Baci this month, and what began as an X spat has now escalated into a formal legal threat citing defamation and Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.

Hilda Baci, whose full name is Hilda Effiong Bassey and who holds a Guinness World Record for a cooking marathon, is not a party to the underlying label dispute.

She is, by her lawyers’ account, a bystander caught in the crossfire of a fight between Seyi Vibez and Dapper Music CEO Damilola Akinwunmi, who is Baci’s partner.

No lawsuit has yet been filed; the matter remains at the demand-letter stage.

How the food became the flashpoint

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show the trouble began on 14 August 2026, when Seyi Vibez, real name Afolabi Oluwaseyi Balogun took to X to accuse Akinwunmi of breaching his contract and diverting catalogue money, amid a wider fallout involving fellow former Dapper Music signees Shallipopi and T.I. Blaze over an alleged N1 billion in missing royalties.

In the heat of that exchange, Seyi Vibez turned his attention to Baci, alleging that catalogue money had funded her cosmetic surgery and claiming, in one post, that he once ate her food and it “almost killed” him.

The lawyers step in

The posts did not stay online for long, but the damage, according to Baci’s camp, was already done.

On 15 August, Lagos law firm Olaniwun Ajayi LP wrote to Seyi Vibez on Baci’s behalf, describing the posts as “defamatory, malicious and false” and citing possible breaches of the Cybercrimes Act.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the firm’s letter noted the posts had racked up about 4.3 million views, roughly 7,100 reposts, some 3,000 comments and 45,000 likes before deletion, a reach the lawyers say fuelled online harassment directed at their client.

The demands were specific; permanent removal of the posts, a public retraction and apology across all platforms, and a call from Seyi Vibez urging his followers to stop targeting Baci.

He was given three days to provide a written undertaking.

An uneasy quiet

Seyi Vibez has since deleted the original posts, though his public reaction to the legal letter has read, by several accounts, as unbothered rather than contrite.

Neither Baci’s legal team nor the singer’s camp has confirmed whether a written undertaking was ultimately signed, and no suit had been filed as of this report.

What is clear is that a private industry dispute over royalties has, for now, put a defamation question, and Nigeria’s still-young Cybercrimes Act, squarely in the public eye.
