The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has strongly denounced a viral social media video depicting a mother and her children publicly ridiculing a young boy over bedwetting.
In the circulated footage, family members lined up individually before the camera to declare in Yoruba that they were not responsible for bedwetting. The targeted child was compelled to appear last in the sequence and state on camera that he is the one who wets the bed.
Reacting to the incident, the agency classified the actions captured in the video as severe verbal and psychological abuse, emphasizing that involuntary medical or developmental conditions in children must never be weaponized for public humiliation or social media engagement.
”What we are seeing here is verbal and emotional abuse of a child. Bedwetting is not a reason to shame, ridicule, humiliate, or publicly expose a child,” the agency stated.
Child protection advocates point out that nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting, is frequently a developmental stage or physiological condition beyond a child’s conscious control. Public shaming campaigns by primary caregivers can cause profound long-term psychological damage, including severe anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and social withdrawal.
The agency stressed that domestic environments should serve as safe havens rather than sources of trauma. “Children deserve to grow up in environments where they feel safe, loved, and supported, especially when they are experiencing something they may not even be able to control. This is why we keep talking about child wellbeing and positive parenting. The adults responsible for raising children have a duty to protect their emotional and psychological well-being, not become the source of their pain.”
Child welfare organizations across the country continue to urge parents and guardians dealing with behavioral or physiological challenges in minors to seek professional medical or psychological guidance rather than resorting to punitive or humiliating corrective measures.
