The Palace Before The Battlefield: ADC’s Internal Contest Begins Long Before Nigerians Vote

Every political organisation eventually learns the same lesson history has taught for centuries. The greatest threat to a kingdom seldom arrives first at the city walls. It often emerges inside the palace, where trusted allies begin contesting authority, legitimacy and succession.

Medieval Europe understood this well. Before England fought foreign enemies, it fought itself during the Wars of the Roses. Before Rome lost provinces, its elite battled for influence within the Senate.

Political institutions rarely collapse because outsiders are too strong. They often weaken because insiders cannot agree on who should hold the keys to power. The African Democratic Congress now appears to be navigating one of those familiar moments.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Southwest leadership of the African Democratic Congress has rejected calls for the removal of the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola. The zonal leadership described allegations against the former Interior Minister as false, misleading and constitutionally unfounded.

A Party Defends Its Own

The position followed a meeting of recognised national and zonal officers from the Southwest. The meeting was led by the party’s National Vice Chairman for the Southwest, Akinbowale Omole.

In a communiqué, the leaders rejected a petition seeking Aregbesola’s removal. They also questioned the authority of those behind the petition.

According to the Southwest leadership, the petitioners do not represent the recognised leadership of the party in the zone, ValidViewNetwork reports.

The Constitution Takes Centre Stage

The dispute centres on who bears responsibility for approving the party’s candidates. The Southwest leadership insists the answer lies in the party’s constitution.

ValidViewNetwork reports that party leaders said the National Executive Committee approved the outcome of the primaries before candidates’ names reached INEC.

They argued that the National Secretary merely carries out decisions already taken by the party’s highest organs.According to the communiqué, neither the conduct of primaries nor approval of candidates rests solely with the office of the National Secretary.

History Rarely Changes Its Script

Political scientists have long observed that institutions are tested most severely when authority becomes contested.

The fifteenth century Wars of the Roses were presented as disputes over succession. In reality, they became contests over legitimacy. The same principle appeared centuries later inside many modern political parties across Europe and Africa. The personalities change. The arguments evolve. The underlying struggle remains remarkably familiar.

Every institution eventually reaches the point where procedure competes with personality. When that happens, constitutions become more important than friendships.

Rules become more valuable than rhetoric.

Fresh Allegations Meet Firm Resistance

The Southwest leadership accused the petitioners of rejecting previous reconciliation efforts. Party officials also alleged that the same individuals violated the party’s constitution during congresses and primaries.

They described the latest accusations against Aregbesola as baseless. The communiqué warned those claiming to represent the Southwest leadership to stop what it described as impersonation.

It also threatened to reveal details of meetings allegedly held with groups opposed to the party’s national leadership, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Beyond One Petition

Every democracy depends on political parties.Every political party depends on internal legitimacy.Without accepted rules, even the strongest organisation begins to lose coherence.

This is why disputes over procedure often matter more than disagreements over personalities. The controversy comes as the ADC prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s national leadership has sought to project unity following recent legal disputes involving rival factions. Whether this latest disagreement fades quickly or develops into a broader internal challenge remains uncertain.

There is another lesson history quietly teaches. When King Henry II appointed Thomas Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury in the twelfth century, he expected loyalty to office to outweigh loyalty to principle.

History proved more complicated. Institutions have always tested the balance between authority and independence. The ADC insists its constitution, not individual preference, guided every decision now under dispute. Its critics disagree. The facts behind those competing claims will ultimately be measured not by press statements, but by the party’s own constitutional processes.

One hopes those processes prove stronger than personalities. Nigerian politics has witnessed too many leaders begin their journeys promising institutional discipline, only to preserve the very culture they once criticised.

For the ADC, this episode is about more than Rauf Aregbesola. It is an early test of whether the party can demonstrate that rules, rather than rival camps, will define its march toward 2027.
