Amid mounting public outrage and police investigations surrounding alleged organ trafficking rings in the Federal Capital Territory, medical experts have stepped forward to reframe the narrative. Contrary to widespread social media speculation that vulnerable young men were coerced or deceived into losing their organs, a consultant plastic surgeon, Dr. Torngee Malu, has insisted that the procedures were voluntary donations carried out under strict legal frameworks.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Dr. Malu maintained that accounts given by the donors themselves confirm they were fully cognizant of the procedures. According to the surgeon, the individuals involved not only gave explicit informed consent but also went a step further to legalize their decisions.

”The people involved are above 18, and they said it themselves. They actually signed consent, and the doctors noted that they swore a court affidavit confirming they were aware of what was going on and that they were donating voluntarily,” Malu stated.

Navigating Law and Medical Ethics

Addressing the stringent parameters required for organ transplants in Nigeria, Dr. Malu pointed to the provisions of the National Health Act, which governs lawful organ harvesting and tissue transfers. He emphasized that standard medical protocols were strictly adhered to—ensuring that all donors were consenting adults of sound mind and that the surgeries took place inside accredited clinical environments outfitted with specialized surgical teams.

The medical expert drew attention to the technical dichotomy of the operations, explaining that distinct, independent surgical teams handle the extraction from the donor and the immediate graft onto the recipient to maximize tissue viability.

The Debate Over Financial Compensation

The controversy has largely been fueled by monetary compensation given to donors following the procedures. Responding to criticisms regarding cash payouts, Dr. Malu argued that financial incentives or reimbursements do not automatically translate to illicit trafficking. He likened the practice to standard biological compensations already normalized in the health sector.

”Daily, people are compensated or paid when they donate blood, which is also a vital body organ, in various hospitals,” Malu noted, stressing that the legal framework permits donor compensation without fixing a rigid market price for human tissue.

Call to Protect Medical Professionals

With scores of patients battling end-stage renal failure daily across Nigeria, the surgeon warned against allowing unverified social media narratives to trigger a witch hunt against seasoned medical practitioners. He argued that instead of subjecting lifesaving medical personnel and altruistic donors to public victimisation and police parading, the nation should focus on building a transparent, well-regulated organ donation system.
