A 60-year-old Welsh man has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison after concealing his adoptive mother’s body in a living room chest freezer for nearly three years while continuously pocketing more than £78,000 in state benefits.

The Discovery at Porthcawl

The macabre deception unraveled in February 2026 at a residential property on Poplar Crescent in the seaside town of Porthcawl, South Wales. Local medical practitioners, having not sighted 89-year-old Sylvia Phillips since 2022 despite active prescription pick-ups, raised urgent concerns that triggered a police welfare check.

When South Wales Police officers arrived at the address, a nervous Christopher Phillips claimed his mother was away visiting cousins in London. Officers grew suspicious when they pressed for details and noticed a large chest freezer placed prominently in the living room. The appliance was draped with a leopard-print throw and adorned with fresh roses and a birthday card reading, “To Mum, from Christopher and Tina”—the latter being the family dog.

Inside lay the remains of Sylvia Phillips, who had passed away in March 2023.

Psychology, Isolation, and Fraud

Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard that Phillips, a former company director who later became his mother’s full-time carer, purchased the chest freezer just two days after her death. Having lived together for roughly five decades, defence counsel Ruth Smith described Phillips as an intensely isolated and vulnerable individual.

According to court statements, Phillips eventually moved downstairs to sleep near the appliance, frequently opening it to hold his mother’s hand and talking to her about television programmes like Coronation Street and horse racing as though she were still alive. He told psychiatrists and investigators that he simply “didn’t want to let her go”.

Beneath the grief-stricken facade, however, a calculated financial fraud took place. Over the course of 34 months, Phillips collected £78,190.92 in state pensions, pension credits, attendance allowances, winter fuel payments, cost-of-living payments, and housing benefits. He routinely picked up her prescriptions while lying to medical professionals, telling them his mother repeatedly refused to attend appointments or undergo check-ups.

Sentencing and Legal Repercussions

Phillips pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body and two counts of fraud by false representation.

Sentencing the defendant at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke acknowledged the psychological fragility surrounding the case but stressed that the prolonged concealment and fiscal exploitation severely aggravated the crime.

  • Imprisonment: Two years and four months.
  • Judicial Remarks: Judge Lloyd-Clarke noted that while the mother suffered the ultimate indignity of being stored in a chest freezer, the offense was defined by the extended deception of healthcare workers, police, and government authorities for financial gain.

An official inquest into Sylvia Phillips’ exact cause of death remains ongoing, while separate confiscation proceedings have been initiated to claw back the defrauded public funds.
