Cartel Leader Arrested Over Influencer’s Live-Streamed Murder

​GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Mexican authorities have captured a high-ranking regional leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in connection with the shocking execution of a 23-year-old fashion influencer, a crime broadcast live to thousands of horrified online followers.

​Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, widely known by his alias “R-1,” was taken into custody on Thursday by special forces during a precision operation in downtown Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco. According to federal security officials, Álvarez Ayala ordered the May 2025 assassination of beauty influencer Valeria Marquez after she ended her relationship with his son, Francisco Álvarez.

​Marquez was inside her Jalisco beauty salon streaming live to tens of thousands of followers when an armed assailant stormed the premises. Viewers watched in real time as the gunman approached off-camera, confirmed her identity, and opened fire, striking her in the chest and head. The tragic broadcast captured Marquez slumping onto her workstation before a bystander rushed into the frame to abruptly cut the live feed. Just hours prior to the fatal attack, Marquez had posted an Instagram Story smiling from the same salon.

​Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, revealed during a briefing that the investigation points directly to a personal vendetta fueled by the breakup.

​”He had threatened her on several occasions, and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, R-1, to carry out the femicide,” García Harfuch stated.

​Investigators noted that Álvarez Ayala was also a primary target tied to other high-profile violent crimes in the region, including the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was gunned down during a Day of the Dead festival in November 2025.

​As the investigation widens, Mexican law enforcement confirms that neither Francisco Álvarez nor the individual who pulled the trigger in the salon has been apprehended. Federal security forces continue to search for remaining suspects connected to the cartel network involved in the conspiracy.
