The Nigerian Army’s 63 Brigade has confirmed the death of a suspected criminal after a violent confrontation with a soldier at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State. The incident, which occurred on October 13, 2025, was sparked by an attempt by the deceased, identified as Ugo, and his group to unlawfully enter the estate by bypassing mandatory security checks.
According to a statement released on October 15, Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, explained that the soldier on duty stopped the group and demanded their identities. The group responded aggressively and violently, escalating the encounter into a physical struggle. During the skirmish, the soldier, acting in self-defense, exercised armed combat skills that resulted in the injury and subsequent death of the suspect.

Ugo was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival. Following the incident, the Otu-Jeremi Police Division was notified for investigation and necessary actions.
The Army has used this occasion to urge Delta State residents to adhere strictly to security protocols and remain law-abiding. They also reaffirmed their commitment to respecting the fundamental human rights of all citizens while fulfilling their statutory duties.
The 63 Brigade’s statement underscores the importance of security compliance at sensitive military estates as a means to prevent unfortunate confrontations. This incident has sparked discussions on the balance between security enforcement and human rights protection, with calls for justice by human rights activists and the deceased’s family .
