Six Parties, One Table: Inside The Opposition’s August 31 Gamble To Build A Single Front Against Tinubu

ABUJA

With the ruling party already naming its campaign council and touring the states, six opposition parties are racing to answer the one question that has sunk every anti-APC coalition since 2015: can rivals who each want the presidency actually share a table?

The G100 opposition coalition, led by African Democratic Congress chieftain Salihu Lukman, is the group behind Sunday’s headline-grabbing announcement, a national summit scheduled for August 31, 2026, bringing together the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, National Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi are both expected to attend, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders, though neither has publicly committed to stepping aside for a single consensus candidate.

A Framework Before A Face

Findings show the coalition has deliberately avoided the question of who leads the ticket, choosing instead to build what Lukman’s group calls “A Framework for Opposition Cooperation and Coordination”, a document identifying shared interests among parties that, by Lukman’s own admission, each carry their own history and rival ambitions.

“The first question before party leaders is not who leads the ticket. It is what we are, together, prepared to do for this country,” Lukman said in a statement announcing the date.

Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm the summit was originally scheduled earlier in the week but postponed to allow more consultation time and to avoid clashing with a separate national peace accord signing.

The Honesty Behind The Optimism

ValidViewNetwork’s sourcing across the political wires shows Lukman has been unusually candid about the obstacles ahead, conceding that personal ambition remains one of the coalition’s biggest threats.

“Each one of them wants to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but only one of them can be president,” he said, warning that continued infighting would only strengthen the party the coalition is trying to unseat.

It is a tension Nigerians have watched play out before 2019’s fractured opposition and 2023’s split PDP-Labour vote both linger as cautionary tales any coalition-builder in this country now has to reckon with, whether they say so publicly or not.

What August 31 Will Actually Decide

The summit itself is not expected to produce a presidential candidate; by the coalition’s own framing, it marks only the start of formal negotiations on structure, principles and terms of cooperation.

Whether six parties with six sets of ambitions can turn that framework into an actual ballot-ready alliance before 2027 remains the question neither Sunday’s summit, nor this report, can yet answer.
