ABUJA
Sometimes what a government doesn’t say draws more attention than anything it does, and Thursday’s gathering at the Presidential Villa is a case in point.
President Bola Tinubu is the figure at the centre of the meeting, holding a closed-door session with 31 governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
ValidViewNetwork gathered that the meeting, convened under the Progressives Governors Forum, began shortly before 4:00pm and followed immediately after the governors had sat through a National Economic Council session presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, no agenda for the presidential session had been made public at the time of filing.
Timing That Speaks For Itself
Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm the gathering fell just eight days after the Independent National Electoral Commission officially opened campaigns for the 2027 general election, and only five days after the APC published the membership list of its Presidential Campaign Council, headed by former Zamfara governor and sitting senator Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General.
Findings show political watchers have read the sequence, economic council, then a private presidential huddle, all within days of the campaign clock starting, as evidence that the ruling party is moving early to lock in unity among its 31 sitting governors, a bloc no party heading into 2027 can afford to let drift.
A Campaign Council Already Under Scrutiny
ValidViewNetwork’s sourcing shows the timing carries an added layer of tension; the APC’s campaign council list, published days earlier, included Betta Edu and Ngozi Olejeme, two politicians with active EFCC entanglements.
Edu remains suspended over a ₦585 million transfer memo from January 2024, with the EFCC’s probe report yet to be released, while Olejeme faces an ongoing money laundering trial before a federal high court over allegations tied to NSITF funds.
Neither appointment has been reversed, and neither the presidency nor the party had addressed the overlap by the time of this report.
What Remains Unknown
Neither the presidency nor the Progressives Governors Forum had issued a statement on the meeting’s purpose as of Thursday evening, and ValidViewNetwork will update this report as official confirmation emerges.
For now, the optics alone, a united show of 31 governors behind closed doors, opposition parties simultaneously plotting their own unity summit for August 31 tell a story of a political season that has begun in earnest, whatever the presidency eventually says about Thursday’s agenda.
