Self-Proclaimed Vampire Ordered to Hospital Over Macabre Animal Murders

​A self-proclaimed vampire who orchestrated a macabre months-long campaign of leaving mutilated animal carcasses outside rural Hampshire churches has been ordered into indefinite psychiatric detention.

​Benjamin Lewis, 48, of Totton, Southampton, left local communities and churchgoers deeply unnerved after staging disturbing displays featuring decapitated deer, inverted crosses, and slaughtered lambs across the New Forest region.

​Appearing at Southampton Crown Court, Lewis admitted to five counts of religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm, or distress, alongside two counts of theft. Rather than facing a traditional prison sentence, Judge William Mousley KC handed down an indefinite hospital order under the Mental Health Act, noting that Lewis poses a severe escalation risk.

​A Reign of Fear Across Rural Parishes

​The unsettling campaign spanned several months, targeting holy sites including churches in Colbury, Bramshaw, Totton, and Emery Down. Parishioners arrived to find grotesque arrangements, such as deer heads crowned with inverted crosses, a lamb draped over a church cross, and another placed chillingly beneath a statue of the Virgin Mary.

​Local farmers suffered firsthand as Lewis stole livestock from pastures. Investigators later discovered animal blood smeared inside his vehicle, while searches of his home uncovered dark sketches of vampires, occult symbols, upside-down crucifixes, and disturbing notes regarding blood consumption.

​”It’s meant to be a place of sanctuary, but unfortunately these incidents caused them to be fearful of going to their sanctuaries,” prosecutor Laura Deuxberry told the court, noting that even staff at a local mental health facility were targeted when a deer’s head and inverted cross were left at their gates.

​Tracking “Count Dracula” on Full Moons

​The investigation proved to be one of the most eccentric cases handled by Hampshire Constabulary. PC Jessica Surman admitted the inquiry frequently crossed into surreal territory. During preliminary court proceedings, Lewis even responded with “Count Dracula” when asked to state his name.

​According to police, Lewis harbored deep-seated delusions that consuming animal blood would grant him immortality, protect him from damnation, and physically transform him into a vampire.

​Driven by these beliefs, detectives monitored satanic calendars and deployed undercover officers to stake out isolated woodland churches during full moon phases. The stakeouts ultimately paid off, leading to his arrest after DNA evidence tied him to the mutilated remains. Medical records show Lewis has a history of similar fixations, having previously been jailed in 2003 for terrorizing a local vicar while posing as a vampire.

​Consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Gauruv Malhan testified that Lewis suffers from autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, mixed personality disorder, and severe fantastical thinking patterns. Dr Malhan warned the court that the defendant’s escalating behavior carried a clear trajectory toward potential violence against humans.

​Speaking via video link from his secure hospital facility, Lewis offered a brief apology to the community, stating he harbored no ill will toward the officers who brought his bizarre campaign to an end.
