Cambridge Professor Faces Scrutiny Over Thesis and Media Claims

​LONDON — The University of Cambridge’s youngest Black professor is facing intense academic scrutiny after a series of discrepancies emerged regarding his media claims, autobiographical narrative, and doctoral thesis.

​Jason Arday, who was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge in 2023 at the age of 37, is confronting detailed allegations that sections of his 2015 PhD dissertation from Liverpool John Moores University closely overlap with a 2009 thesis by Paula Zwozdiak-Myers without correct attribution.

​The controversy intensified following independent analyses highlighting matching passages and copy-editing oversights. Critics have also questioned several of Professor Arday’s widely publicized biographical claims, including a statement made to the University of Bath’s Race Equality Taskforce in 2022 where he asserted he was pulled out of the television documentary series Seven Up at age 14. The BBC confirmed that the program began in 1964 and its spin-off started in 2000—when Arday was already 15—and that he was never involved.

​Furthermore, public assertions that Arday did not learn to read or write until age 18 have drawn heightened debate across British higher education circles.

​Defending his record, Professor Arday has admitted to formatting and structural “errors” while forcefully rejecting the label of a liar. He has attributed past difficulties to autism and complex learning disabilities, alongside a lack of structured supervision during his doctoral studies. Supporters argue that the renewed focus on his credentials constitutes an aggressive, politically motivated campaign designed to undermine minority academics.

​Both the University of Cambridge and Liverpool John Moores University stated that previous reviews found no formal academic misconduct. However, external pressure continues to mount from academic integrity watchdogs demanding a transparent, independent inquiry into the disputed texts.
