LAGOS – In a vibrant display of state pride and administrative solidarity, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday night hosted a prestigious State Banquet in honour of the newly appointed 33rd Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The event, held at the historic Parliament Building in Marina, served as a formal homecoming for Disu, whom the Governor described as a “distinguished son of Lagos” and a shining example of the state’s excellence in public service. IGP Disu, who was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February 2026, previously served with distinction as the Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

A Legacy of Leadership
Addressing a gallery of top government officials, judicial officers, and traditional rulers, Governor Sanwo-Olu remarked that Disu’s elevation to the pinnacle of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) was a well-deserved recognition of his three-decade career defined by professionalism and intelligence-led policing.
”Lagos is proud to have nurtured a leader who understands that security is the bedrock of development,” the Governor stated. “His tenure in Lagos proved that with the right leadership, we can build a police force that is both feared by criminals and loved by the citizens.”

As a token of appreciation, Governor Sanwo-Olu, joined by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, presented a bespoke artistic portrait to the IGP and his wife, Mrs. Mutiat Disu. A unique highlight of the evening included the presentation of Judo outfits, a nod to the IGP’s well-known passion for the martial art and his role as a former Chairman of the Lagos State Judo Association.
Strengthening State-Police Ties
In his response, IGP Disu expressed profound gratitude to the Lagos State Government, describing the banquet as an emotional homecoming. He reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the NPF into a more accountable and community-oriented institution..

The IGP pledged to deepen the existing collaboration between the NPF and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) to ensure the Mega City remains a safe haven for investment and residency. “Security is a shared responsibility,” Disu noted. “We will continue to work closely with the state to deploy technology and AI-driven intelligence to stay ahead of modern security challenges.”
