ABUJA – A cloud of grief and outrage has descended upon the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) community following the tragic death of a young corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was reportedly shot by security operatives in the Federal Capital Territory.
The victim, popularly known by friends and colleagues as “Samad” or “Abdulsalam,” was killed in the early hours of Saturday, April 26, 2026, in the Shagari Quarters area of Dei-Dei, Abuja.
Fatal Encounter at Shagari Quarters
Preliminary reports indicate that the fatal incident occurred during a pre-dawn patrol in the neighborhood. Jamiu was allegedly confronted by individuals identified by witnesses as personnel of the Nigerian Army.
According to community sources, the operatives were responding to reports of criminal activity in the area when they encountered the corps member. In a harrowing turn of events, it is alleged that the personnel mistook Jamiu for a fleeing suspect or a thief, leading to the discharge of a firearm. The victim was reportedly shot in the head and died at the scene before medical assistance could be sought.
Calls for Justice and Accountability
The news of the killing has sparked intense reactions on social media, with fellow corps members and civil society organizations demanding an immediate and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
While the Nigerian Army and the FCT Police Command have yet to issue a comprehensive formal statement regarding the specific personnel involved, sources within the security architecture suggest that an internal inquiry is being prioritized to determine if rules of engagement were breached.
”Samad was a dedicated youth corps member with a bright future ahead of him,” a close associate of the deceased stated. “To lose a life in such a manner, under the guise of ‘mistaken identity,’ is unacceptable and heart-wrenching.”
The NYSC management is expected to visit the family of the deceased as the community calls for the prosecution of those responsible for the untimely death of the young graduate.
