A routine enforcement operation turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy in the Ajegunle area of Lagos on Tuesday, February 18, after a pregnant woman, Zainab Bakare, was seriously injured during a police raid.
Officers from the Ajeromi Division of the Nigeria Police Force reportedly collided with a commercial motorcycle carrying Bakare along Layinka Street. The incident has sparked outrage among residents who accuse the police of prioritizing vehicle impoundment over human life.
The Collision at Layinka Street
Witness accounts suggest that officers had positioned a minibus at a strategic junction near Arumoh Street to intercept commercial motorcyclists. As the motorcycle carrying Bakare approached, the police vehicle allegedly struck it at close range, causing both the rider and the expectant mother to crash onto the asphalt.
”The pregnant woman fell and began crying in pain,” said witness Moshood Oshunfurewa. “We rushed to assist her, while the officers initially focused on taking the motorcycle to the station.”
A Night of Terror for the Expectant Mother
Speaking from her recovery bed, Bakare recounted the harrowing moment. She had been returning from the hospital where she was supporting her sister in labor when the accident occurred.
”The rider slowed down at the T-junction, but suddenly, the minibus hit us,” Bakare stated. She sustained visible injuries to her arms and legs and expressed deep anxiety regarding the safety of her unborn child. She further alleged that the officers showed little concern for her condition until a crowd of angry residents intervened.
Legal Questions and Enforcement Tactics
The incident has reignited the debate over police conduct in Lagos. Residents pointed out that the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area is not among the zones where commercial motorcycles are currently banned under the Lagos State Transport Law.
”Enforcement should not come at the expense of endangering lives,” noted one resident who assisted in stabilizing Bakare. The process of stabilizing her reportedly took over three hours as community members scrambled to find medical help.
This event follows a pattern of rising tensions between law enforcement and motorcyclists in Lagos, following similar violent confrontations reported in the Isheri area late last year. As of press time, the Lagos State Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the conduct of the Ajeromi Division officers.
