In the high-pressure boiler room of Nigerian journalism, where headlines are forged and truths are defended against the odds, few figures loom as large—yet remain as humble—as Ayodele Akinkuotu. Today, as the man fondly called “Brother Ayo” hits the milestone of 75, the media fraternity pauses to celebrate not just a veteran editor, but a “Generalissimo” who defined an era.
While others sought the glare of the spotlight, Akinkuotu was content to be the engine room of TELL Magazine. He was the master craftsman behind the scenes, turning raw reporting into the “art and science” of storytelling. To his protégés, he wasn’t just a boss; he was a mentor who sired a generation of journalists, teaching them that news writing is a craft requiring both dexterity and an iron-clad ethical spine.
Akinkuotu’s career is a masterclass in professional integrity. From his formative years at the Daily Times to the revolutionary days of TELL, he remained a personification of the best of humanity—affable, avuncular, and entirely devoid of guile. In a nation often fractured by lines of faith and tribe, his journalism remained refreshingly “sans ethnic and religious bias.”
His commitment to the truth was not without a heavy price. During the dark days of the Babangida and Abacha juntas, Akinkuotu stood as a bulwark against tyranny. For his “uncommon stand” against military rapacity, he was hounded and abducted, spending harrowing days in the gulag. He wore those scars not as a badge of vanity, but as a silent testament to the cost of a free press.
Were he in the ivory towers of academia, Akinkuotu would long ago have been decorated as a Professor Emeritus. His contributions to the profession are prodigious, his influence “minting” the careers of countless editors leading newsrooms today. He remains the quintessential Omoluabi—a man of character, a journalism impresario, and a teacher of teachers.
As he marks 75 years, we celebrate an icon who proved that you can reach the pinnacle of power in media while remaining a gentleman. May the years ahead be as rich in blessings as the legacy he has built for us all.
Congratulations, Sir.
